{"id":51959,"date":"2023-05-18T00:46:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T00:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/six-million-patients-data-feared-stolen-from-pharmerica\/"},"modified":"2023-05-18T00:46:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T00:46:28","slug":"six-million-patients-data-feared-stolen-from-pharmerica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/six-million-patients-data-feared-stolen-from-pharmerica\/","title":{"rendered":"Six million patients&#8217; data feared stolen from PharMerica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PharMerica, one of the largest pharmacy service providers in the US, has revealed its IT systems were breached \u2013 and it&#8217;s feared the intruders stole personal and healthcare data belonging to more than 5.8 million past customers<\/p>\n<p>The cyber heist happened around March 12, when &#8220;an unknown third party&#8221; gained access to computer systems and may well have grabbed patients&#8217; info including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medication lists and health insurance information, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pharmerica.com\/data-privacy-incident\/\">notice<\/a> on PharMerica&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p>A sample <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2023\/05\/17\/pharmerica_sample_letter.pdf\">breach notification letter<\/a> [PDF] submitted to the Maine Attorney General is addressed to &#8220;Administrator\/Executor of the Estate of&#8221; \u2013 meaning at least some of the sensitive information stolen in the breach belonged to people who are dead. Neither company immediately responded to <em>The Register<\/em>&#8216;s questions about the incident, but we will update this story if and when we hear back from the organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upon discovering the incident, PharMerica promptly began an internal investigation and engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate and secure its computer systems,&#8221; the notice said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZGYT3zUmxOCdIkkK006zPQAAAEM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZGYT3zUmxOCdIkkK006zPQAAAEM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;At this point, PharMerica is not aware of any fraud or identity theft to any individual as a result of this incident, but is nonetheless notifying potentially affected individuals to provide them with more information and resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A ransomware gang called Money Message <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FalconFeedsio\/status\/1644633969785184256\">claimed responsibility<\/a> for the intrusion, and added both PharMerica and BrightSpring to its leak site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The miscreants claimed to have two million PharMerica and BrightSpring Health records \u2013 including Social Security numbers from 400 databases. At the time, DataBreaches said it was able to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.databreaches.net\/pharmerica-and-brightspring-health-services-hit-by-money-message\/\">validate<\/a> four Social Security numbers (out of four attempts) as actual people. However, it could not determine if the stolen data was current.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, TechCrunch reported that it had seen samples of the data that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/16\/us-pharmacy-giant-says-hackers-accessed-personal-data-of-almost-6-million-patients\/\">appear to be protected health information<\/a> belonging to at least 100 patients.
