The Twitter-owning billionaire said his platform&#8217;s DM encryption would &#8220;grow in sophistication rapidly,&#8221; with the &#8220;acid test&#8221; being that &#8220;I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That suggests Twitter is aiming for secure end-to-end encryption for direct messages.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZFzB7ruH@WsCjjUq5dxVZAAAAMs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZFzB7ruH@WsCjjUq5dxVZAAAAMs&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Musk added that Twitter would also be adding voice and video chat &#8220;so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number.&#8221; This, perhaps, is the next &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2023\/04\/13\/twitter_users_can_now_trade\/\">everything app<\/a>&#8221; feature &#8211; it&#8217;s a clear attempt to lure users from platforms like Signal, which offer encrypted communications by default, but require a phone number that&#8217;s publicly visible and used to contact others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">DM at your own risk<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, &#8220;encrypted messages arrive today&#8221; is no guarantee that&#8217;s actually the case, and Twitter users assuming their DMs are now truly private are doing so at their own risk. Musk has said end-to-end encryption of DMs was a goal since taking over the company last year, but since seizing the reins in October, he had yet to follow through on that promise.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, Twitter has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/20\/encryption_abortion_data\/\">history<\/a> of less-than-stellar treatment of its user&#8217;s privacy: A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/25\/twitter_investigates_data_breach\/\">software bug<\/a> allowed bad actors to harvest phone numbers, email addresses and account IDs for 5.4 million twitter users last year, and former Twitter security chief turned whistleblower Peiter &#8220;Mudge&#8221; Zatko revealed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/23\/twitter_security_whisterblower\/\">bevy<\/a> of security concerns at the company shortly before Musk took over.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also <a href=\"https:\/\/restofworld.org\/2023\/elon-musk-twitter-government-orders\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">self-reported<\/a> that it was getting increased numbers of government requests to remove tweets and reveal user information from governments since Musk took over. According to the same dataset, Twitter hasn&#8217;t refused to comply with any of the 971 government requests it received since October 2022, and fully complied with 83 percent of requests. Prior to Musk&#8217;s takeover, Twitter averaged around 50 percent compliance with such requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Musk said on February 3 that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1621544497388875777\" rel=\"nofollow\">starting today<\/a>&#8221; Twitter would begin sharing ad revenue with creators, but let slip last night &#8211; a full 95 days after he said it&#8217;d be starting &#8211; that Twitter was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1656077408511086593\" rel=\"nofollow\">still working<\/a> on the software needed to share ad revenues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As any security-conscious pro will tell you, it is safest to operate on the assumption that a service isn&#8217;t encrypted until presented with actual confirmation. \u00ae<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">Updated to add<\/h3>\n<p>Twitter has now <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-twitter\/encrypted-direct-messages\">shared more details<\/a> about its promised encrypted direct messages. As we should have expected, to benefit from this privacy feature, both the sender and receiver need to be verified or affiliated with a verified organization.<\/p>\n<p>And to be verified, you need to be a paid-up Twitter Blue subscriber, typically.<\/p>\n<p>Also, conversations won&#8217;t be truly strong end-to-end encrypted. As the above link states:<\/p>\n<p>Twitter said it&#8217;s working on adding cryptographic signature checks and safety numbers to combat man-in-the-middle attacks.
