{"id":51718,"date":"2023-05-02T15:25:47","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T15:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/34571\/T-Mobile-Promises-Better-Security-After-Years-Second-Breach.html"},"modified":"2023-05-02T15:25:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T15:25:47","slug":"t-mobile-promises-better-security-after-years-second-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/t-mobile-promises-better-security-after-years-second-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"T-Mobile Promises Better Security After Year&#8217;s Second Breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.scmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/TMobile-digital.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>T-Mobile apologized to customers affected by its second data breach this year and says it is continuing to work on enhancements to its information security systems.<\/p>\n<p>The latest breach involved the theft of personal details, account information and PIN numbers belonging to 836 customers between February 24 and March 30.<\/p>\n<p>The volume of data stolen in the latest incident is small compared to a breach revealed in January where hackers exploited a third-party vendor\u2019s application programming interface to access 37 million T-Mobile accounts. But it is a further blow to the reputation of the U.S.\u2019s second-largest wireless carrier which has notched up nine data breaches since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>It is also symptomatic of a surge in attacks on telecom companies over the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile\u2019s latest breach was discovered on March 27 and <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.web.maine.gov\/online\/aeviewer\/ME\/40\/ea3bf342-eca7-4833-b128-7b09f6893ac4.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, Aaron Frey. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.web.maine.gov\/online\/aeviewer\/ME\/40\/ea3bf342-eca7-4833-b128-7b09f6893ac4\/00363120-37a5-4248-aa8c-0be84d146071\/document.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter to affected customers<\/a>, T-Mobile said the information obtained by the hackers may have included customers\u2019 names, contact information, social security numbers, government ID details, and dates of birth, along with their T-Mobile account, PIN and phone numbers.<\/p>\n<p>No personal financial account information or call records were stolen.<\/p>\n<p>While it didn\u2019t reveal details of the hack, T-Mobile told affected customers: \u201cthe measures we have in place to alert us to unauthorized activity worked as designed and we were able to determine that a bad actor gained access to limited information from a small number of T-Mobile accounts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we have a number of safeguards in place to prevent unauthorized access such as this from happening, we recognize that we must continue to make improvements to stay ahead of bad actors,\u201d the company said in its letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take these issues seriously. We apologize that this happened and are furthering efforts to enhance security of your information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The larger T-Mobile breach revealed in January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/news\/breach\/security-pros-stress-api-security-in-wake-of-latest-t-mobile-breach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prompted a warning<\/a> from researchers that poorly protected APIs were becoming a major risk to data security.<\/p>\n<p>In a February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/news\/breach\/wave-of-telco-attacks-tied-to-bad-third-party-vendor-security-hygiene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>, Cyble Research and Intelligence Labs said the January attack led to targeted SIM swapping attacks on Google Fi, which uses T-Mobile as its primary service provider.<\/p>\n<p>That attack occurred just months after T-Mobile reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/analysis\/breach\/experian-t-mobile-reach-settlements-with-40-states-over-past-data-breaches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2.43 million settlement<\/a> with 40 U.S. state attorneys general over a 2015 breach of an Experian network where T-Mobile, an Experian client, stored customer information.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the personal information of 77 million T-Mobile customers was compromised through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/brief\/breach\/t-mobile-breached-through-brute-force-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brute-force attacks<\/a> on the carrier.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE <a
