{"id":51688,"date":"2023-04-28T13:35:15","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T13:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/34560\/Google-Authenticators-New-Syncing-Feature-Raises-Security-Concerns.html"},"modified":"2023-04-28T13:35:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T13:35:15","slug":"google-authenticators-new-syncing-feature-raises-security-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/google-authenticators-new-syncing-feature-raises-security-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Authenticator&#8217;s New Syncing Feature Raises Security Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/files.scmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/0427_google_authenticator.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A new Google Authenticator sync-to-cloud feature for its two-step verification app is coming under fire by privacy advocates who claim communication between endpoint and cloud is unencrypted and can be snooped on by adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>The sync feature was added by Google to help users back up their two-factor authentication code sequences to the cloud allowing them to save time and restore authentications on multiple devices just by adding a new instance of the app on devices logged into a specific Google Account.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Mysk analyzed network traffic of the updated Google Authenticator app and said \u201cit turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices. TL;DR: Don&#8217;t turn it on,\u201d Mysk <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mysk_co\/status\/1651021165727477763\" target=\"_blank\">explained in tweet<\/a> earlier this week. &#8220;Although syncing 2FA secrets across devices is convenient, it comes at the expense of your privacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said the lack of encryption opens users up to data leakage and a possible Google account takeover. A successful attack gives a malicious actor access to the two-factor-authentication&#8217;s QR code used to generate a one-time code, allowing the bad actor to generate the same one-time code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that\u2019s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there\u2019s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access to your Google Account, all of your 2FA secrets would be compromised,&#8221; Mysk wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Ducklin at <a href=\"https:\/\/nakedsecurity.sophos.com\/2023\/04\/26\/google-leaking-2fa-secrets-researchers-advise-against-new-account-sync-feature-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sophos\u2019 Naked Security blog<\/a> noted, anyone with a search warrant for your Google data can access authenticator sensitive data.<\/p>\n<p>The Mysk researchers recommend privacy conscious users to turn off the new syncing feature in Google Authenticator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/christiaanbrand\/status\/1651279598309744640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweet from Google\u2019s Christiaan Brand<\/a>, product manager: identity and security, acknowledges the the privacy concerns and stated Google plans to roll out end-to-end encryption for Google Authenticator \u201cdown the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Google] believes that our current product strikes the right balance for most users and provides significant benefits over
