Software should be and can be made secure whether its source is private or open.<\/p>\n<p>And Lapsus$, of course, is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/03\/30\/lapsus_return_okta_fallout\/\" rel=\"noopener\">possibly extinct<\/a> extortion gang led by teenagers who went on a cybercrime spree last year before the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/03\/24\/police_lapsus_arrests\/\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest<\/a> of its alleged ringleaders. Before that, however, it stole data from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/26\/nvidia_security_breach\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/03\/07\/samsung_lapsus_data_theft\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/22\/okta_lapsus_zero_trust_explanation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Okta<\/a>, and others.<\/p>\n<p>It could be that Medusa is spreading around stuff that was already stolen and leaked.<\/p>\n<p>Medusa \u2014 not to be confused with MedusaLocker, that&#8217;s a separate ransomware operation \u2014 made a name for itself earlier this year when it listed Minneapolis Public Schools among its victims. The criminals stole about 100GB of data, and demanded the school district pay a $1 million ransom before ultimately <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlvieriD\/status\/1636645846707056641\">publishing<\/a> the education system&#8217;s sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>But before dumping the data, the criminals posted a video showing them accessing staff and student files, which seemed to be a first for a ransomware gang pushing an extortion business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\"
