he added.<\/p>\n<p>Following the two <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/07\/18\/albania_down\/\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks<\/a>, which shut down Albania&#8217;s online public services and websites, the White House National Security Council <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/09\/07\/statement-by-nsc-spokesperson-adrienne-watson-on-irans-cyberattack-against-albania\/\">pledged<\/a> to &#8220;take further action to hold Iran accountable for actions that threaten the security of a US ally and set a troubling precedent for cyberspace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZB@cE43eymdNbm2RWcTHJwAAAMQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44ZB@cE43eymdNbm2RWcTHJwAAAMQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Shortly afterward, the US Treasury Department <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/10\/us_sanctions_iran_mois\/\" rel=\"noopener\">issued sanctions<\/a> against Iran&#8217;s intelligence agency in response to the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/15\/iran_cybercrime_indictments_sanctions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">thwart future malicious behavior<\/a> conducted by Iran in cyberspace, US Cyber Command therefore made public its latest &#8220;hunt forward&#8221; defensive operation.<\/p>\n<p>The US conducted its first hunt forward operation in 2018, sending cyber troops to Ukraine. Since then, CNMF has deployed 44 times to 22 countries and conducted hunt operations on nearly 70 networks around the world. These include Albania, Estonia, Lithuania, Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia, among others.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZB@cE43eymdNbm2RWcTHJwAAAMQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33ZB@cE43eymdNbm2RWcTHJwAAAMQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The goal, according to US Cyber Command chief <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/04\/us_cyber_hunt_forward\/\" rel=\"noopener\">General Paul Nakasone<\/a>, is to &#8220;understand what our adversaries are doing, being able to capture that and then being able to share it.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Usually, however, the US cyber forces are pretty closed-lipped about these operations. That seems to have changed a few months into the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine when Nakasone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/02\/nakasone_us_hacking_russia\" rel=\"noopener\">very publicly confirmed<\/a> both offensive and defensive cyber operations to help Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>These hunt forward missions are a win-win for both participating governments, according to the feds. The foreign countries benefit from US cyber security tools and threat intel, and Cyber Command gets to put sensors on networks (with permission, we&#8217;re told), which gives the military better visibility into threats beyond the borders of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>While the hunt forward teams don&#8217;t actually mitigate the threats \u2013 in the case of Albania, the cyber operators provided technical findings from their network hunt to the Albanian government \u2013 they do provide a real-time look into threat actors&#8217; behavior, US Army Major General William Hartman, commander of Cyber National Mission Force, explained in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cybercom.mil\/Media\/News\/Article\/3337717\/committed-partners-in-cyberspace-following-cyberattack-us-conducts-first-defens\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we are invited to hunt on a partner nations&#8217; networks, we are able to find an adversary&#8217;s insidious activity in cyberspace, and share with our partner to take action,&#8221; according to Hartman&#8217;s statement. &#8220;We can then impose costs on our adversaries by exposing their tools, tactics and procedures, and improve the cyber security posture of our partners and allies.&#8221;
