{"id":50948,"date":"2023-03-10T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3690609\/att-informs-9m-customers-about-data-breach.html#tk.rss_security"},"modified":"2023-03-10T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T12:16:00","slug":"att-informs-9m-customers-about-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/att-informs-9m-customers-about-data-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"AT&amp;T informs 9M customers about data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2019\/02\/data_breach_magnifying_server_cables_by_andreypopov_gettyimages-922102638_2400x1600-100788400-large.jpg?auto=webp&amp;quality=85,70\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>AT&amp;T is informing customers about a data breach at a vendor\u2019s system that allowed threat actors to gain access to AT&amp;T\u2019s Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI).<\/p>\n<p>The incident came to light after customers <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.att.com\/conversations\/att-mail-features\/is-this-cpni-email-a-phishing-scam\/64066deaac6ccc24bdf19e05\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted<\/a> the email communication from AT&amp;T on community forums to know if it was legitimate or email fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recently determined that an unauthorized person breached a vendor\u2019s system and gained access to your \u2018Customer Proprietary Network Information\u2019 (CPNI),\u201d AT&amp;T said in the email.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About nine million customers affected<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Approximately nine million customers\u2019 CPNI was accessed by the threat actors, according to a statement given by the company to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/atandt-alerts-9-million-customers-of-data-breach-after-vendor-hack\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bleeping Computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2629975\/for-sale--your-cell-phone-habits.html\">CPNI<\/a> is the information that telecommunication companies in the US acquire about subscribers and includes information on the services they use, the amount paid for the services, and the type of usage. This information is used by third-party communication vendor companies for marketing purposes. Accessing CPNI information typically requires a warrant from a law enforcement agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our industry, CPNI is information related to the telecommunications services you purchase from us, such as the number of lines on your account or the wireless plan to which you are subscribed,\u201d AT&amp;T said in its email to affected customers assuring them that no sensitive personal or financial information such as social security number or credit card information was accessed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone\" id> <\/aside>\n<p>AT&amp;T\u2019s marketing vendor suffered a security failure in January.&nbsp;\u200bExposed CPNI data of AT&amp;T customers included first names, wireless account numbers, wireless phone numbers, and email addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Some impacted customers also had exposure of past due amount, monthly payment amount, and various monthly charges and\/or minutes used, AT&amp;T told the publication adding that the information was several years old. The data exposed mostly related to device upgrade eligibility and did not affect the company systems.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 tablet desktop\" id> <\/aside>\n<p>In its email to the affected customers, the company confirmed that the marketing vendor has fixed the vulnerability. AT&amp;T has also notified the federal law enforcement agencies about the incident. \u201cOur report to law enforcement does not contain specific information about your account, only that the unauthorized access occurred,\u201d AT&amp;T said in its email. The company also offered the customers an option to add extra security to their password free of cost.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Telecom services remain vulnerable<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cyberattacks against the telecom industry are soaring, and several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityhq.com\/blog\/rising-security-concerns-in-the-telecom-industry\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">security researchers<\/a> have predicted it will be a major concern in 2023. This is specifically because of the increased use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3207535\/what-is-iot-the-internet-of-things-explained.html\">IoT<\/a> devices, push towards 5G and the geopolitical conditions as telecom companies provide critical infrastructure for nations.<\/p>\n<p>Within the first three months of the year, telecommunication companies have already reported several cyber security incidents. On January 6, a threat actor claimed to have found a third-party vendor\u2019s unsecured cloud storage containing 37 million AT&amp;T client records. The threat actor shared a sample of 5 million records.<\/p>\n<p>In the same month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3686053\/t-mobile-suffers-8th-data-breach-in-less-than-5-years.html\">T-Mobile<\/a> suffered a cybersecurity incident that resulted in the exposure of the personal details of 37 million users.
