{"id":50903,"date":"2023-03-07T14:43:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T14:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/34393\/Ukraine-Germany-Take-Down-DoppelPaymer-Gang.html"},"modified":"2023-03-07T14:43:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T14:43:46","slug":"ukraine-germany-take-down-doppelpaymer-gang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/ukraine-germany-take-down-doppelpaymer-gang\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine, Germany Take Down DoppelPaymer Gang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German and Ukrainian law enforcement agencies said Monday they conducted simultaneous raids, seizing evidence and detaining several suspects connected with the DoppelPaymer ransomware gang.<\/p>\n<p>The raid, supported by Europol, Dutch police, and the U.S. FBI, was carried out Feb. 28 and targeted &#8220;suspected core members of the criminal group responsible for carrying out large-scale cyberattacks with the DoppelPaymer ransomware,&#8221; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/media-press\/newsroom\/news\/germany-and-ukraine-hit-two-high-value-ransomware-targets#empact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notice<\/a> from Europol.<\/p>\n<figure><img alt srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/_next\/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffiles.scmagazine.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2023%2F03%2FEuropol-DoppelPaymer-raid-2-1.jpg&amp;w=750&amp;q=75 1x, https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/_next\/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffiles.scmagazine.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2023%2F03%2FEuropol-DoppelPaymer-raid-2-1.jpg&amp;w=1920&amp;q=75 2x\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/_next\/image?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffiles.scmagazine.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2023%2F03%2FEuropol-DoppelPaymer-raid-2-1.jpg&amp;w=1920&amp;q=75\" width=\"697\" height=\"418\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"MediaItem_img__WJ8V4\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption>Image Credit: Europol<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>German police said&nbsp;they are aware of 37 different companies that have fallen victim to DoppelPaymer ransomware, including the UK&#8217;s National Health Service and University Hospital D\u00fcsseldorf, where computers were infected with DoppelPaymer in 2020.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-hacking-europe-cf8f8eee1adcec69bcc864f2c4308c94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A woman who needed urgent treatment died<\/a>&nbsp;after she was taken to another city for treatment. In the U.S. victims allegedly paid the group at least \u20ac40 million ($42.6 million) between May 2019 and March 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Europol authorities say they sent three experts to Germany to cross-check information from the raids against Europol databases, provide operational analysis, tracing of cryptocurrency funds and forensic support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The analysis of this data and other related cases is expected to trigger further investigative activities,&#8221; the agency said in the release. &#8220;Europol also set up a Virtual Command Post to connect the investigators and experts from Europol, Germany, Ukraine, the Netherlands and the United States in real time and to coordinate activities during the house searches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DoppelPaymer ransomware appeared in 2019 when cybercriminals started using it to launch attacks on critical infrastructure and industries. Based on the BitPaymer ransomware and part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/brief\/malware\/dridex-trojan-supplants-raccoon-stealer-in-ongoing-rig-exploit-kit-campaign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dridex malware family<\/a>, authorities said DoppelPaymer used a unique tool that could compromise defense mechanisms by terminating the security related-processes of the attacked systems. These attacks were then launched by the notorious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/brief\/cybercrime\/new-detection-bypass-methods-accompany-emotet-revival\">Emotet malware.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>German law enforcement authorities said they were able to identify 11 individuals linked to a group that has operated in various guises since at least 2010, but gave no specific
