{"id":50390,"date":"2023-02-03T11:30:07","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T11:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/another-rac-staffer-nabbed-for-storing-and-sharing-road-accident-data\/"},"modified":"2023-02-03T11:30:07","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T11:30:07","slug":"another-rac-staffer-nabbed-for-storing-and-sharing-road-accident-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/another-rac-staffer-nabbed-for-storing-and-sharing-road-accident-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Another RAC staffer nabbed for storing and sharing road accident data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former employee of RAC, one of Britain&#8217;s major roadside recovery service operators, has pleaded guilty to data theft after he stored traffic accident information on his personal device that was passed onto claims companies.<\/p>\n<p>Asif Iqbal Khan, 42, was handed a \u00a35,000 ($6,120) penalty, ordered to pay for court costs of more than \u00a3900 ($1,100) and a victim surcharge of \u00a3170 ($209) by Dudley Magistrates Court following an <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/action-weve-taken\/enforcement\/asif-iqbal-khan\/\">investigation<\/a> by the country&#8217;s Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted two counts of data theft last month, the UK data watchdog said. It then tipped off the ICO.<\/p>\n<p>The ICO executed a search warrant at Khan&#8217;s address, seizing two phones and a customers receipt for \u00a312,000. Khan was found to have stored data relating to 272 individual incidents on phones he owned.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y90yo@bLIjjUc0rhuUXoGgAAAEA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y90yo@bLIjjUc0rhuUXoGgAAAEA&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Khan pleaded guilty to the counts of theft in a breach of Section 170 of the Data Protection Act.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Eckersley, ICO head of investigations, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/about-the-ico\/media-centre\/news-and-blogs\/2023\/02\/former-rac-employee-fined-for-stealing-data-of-victims-of-road-traffic-incidents\/\">said in a statement<\/a>: &#8220;Being involved in a road traffic accident can be deeply distressing \u2013 to then have this used and your data stolen as a result, adds insult to injury.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;We know that receiving nuisance calls can be hugely frustrating and people often wonder how these companies got their details in the first place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time an incident involving an RAC employees retaining road traffic accident data has gone to court. In 2021, former staffer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/01\/11\/rac_staffer_unauthorised_computer_access\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Kim Doyle pleaded guilty<\/a> to charges of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computer data and selling RAC customer info to an accident claims management company.<\/p>\n<p>In this instance, Doyle, at the time of 33 Village Lane, Higher Whitley in North Yorkshire, England, created lists of traffic accidents that included partial names, mobile phone numbers and car registration data. This was done without the RAC\u2019s consent.
