For the latter, contributors can claim a prize up to $11,337 for such integrations &#8220;that show significant improvement over existing fuzzers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, researchers can earn money for integrating new sanitizers into OSS-Fuzz. If something crops up, it can be worth investigating. Google&#8217;s rewards program uses OSS-Fuzz: a free service that continuously tests code in some 700 open-source projects that the search giant developed in 2016 in response to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2014\/04\/08\/running_openssl_patch_now_to_fix_critical_bug\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Heartbleed vulnerability<\/a> issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A year later, the ad giant established the <a href=\"https:\/\/testing.googleblog.com\/2017\/05\/oss-fuzz-five-months-later-and.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">OSS-Fuzz Reward Program<\/a>. Since then, the bug-bounty efforts have helped fix more than <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/oss-fuzz\/issues\/list?q=status%3AFixed%2CVerified%20Type%3DBug-Security&amp;can=1\" rel=\"nofollow\">8,800<\/a> vulnerabilities and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/oss-fuzz\/issues\/list?q=status%3AFixed%2CVerified%20Type%3DBug&amp;can=1\" rel=\"nofollow\">28,000<\/a> bugs across <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/oss-fuzz\/tree\/master\/projects\" rel=\"nofollow\">850<\/a> projects, we&#8217;re told.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y9szhl8EmzJdHJuiQ8x8LAAAAMc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Y9szhl8EmzJdHJuiQ8x8LAAAAMc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Last summer, the fuzzing service spotted <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/oss-fuzz\/issues\/detail?id=49053\" rel=\"nofollow\">a serious flaw<\/a> in the TinyGLTF project, a library that relies on the C library function wordexp() for file path expansion on untrusted paths from an input file.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the program has paid out $600,000 to more than 65 contributors who helped integrate new projects into OSS-Fuzz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OSS-Fuzz&#8217;s language offerings currently include&nbsp; C\/C++, Go, Rust, Java, Python, and Swift, and it will soon <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/oss-fuzz\/issues\/8324\" rel=\"nofollow\">support JavaScript fuzzing<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.code-intelligence.com\/blog\/jazzer-js\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jazzer.js<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Google <a href=\"https:\/\/openssf.org\/blog\/2022\/06\/09\/introducing-fuzz-introspector-an-openssf-tool-to-improve-fuzzing-coverage\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">launched the OpenSSF FuzzIntrospector<\/a> tool and integrated it into OSS-Fuzz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ossf\/fuzz-introspector\" rel=\"nofollow\">FuzzIntrospector<\/a> tool provides these insights by identifying complex code blocks that are blocked during fuzzing at runtime, as well as suggesting new fuzz targets that can be added,&#8221; Chang said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen users successfully use this tool to improve the coverage of <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ossf\/fuzz-introspector\/blob\/main\/doc\/CaseStudies.md#jsonnet\" rel=\"nofollow\">jsonnet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ossf\/fuzz-introspector\/blob\/main\/doc\/CaseStudies.md#file\" rel=\"nofollow\">file<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ossf\/fuzz-introspector\/blob\/main\/doc\/CaseStudies.md#xpdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">xpdf<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ossf\/fuzz-introspector\/blob\/main\/doc\/CaseStudies.md#bzip2\" rel=\"nofollow\">bzip2<\/a>, among others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y9szhl8EmzJdHJuiQ8x8LAAAAMc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y9szhl8EmzJdHJuiQ8x8LAAAAMc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Bug hunters can use this tool to increase the coverage of a project and now receive a prize as part of the OSS-Fuzz Rewards update, Chang added.<\/p>\n<p>OSS-Fuzz Rewards is part of Google&#8217;s broader <a href=\"https:\/\/bughunters.google.com\/about\/rules\/4928084514701312\/patch-rewards-program-rules\" rel=\"nofollow\">Patch Rewards Program<\/a> that incentivizes finding and fixing security flaws in open source security. It&#8217;s a good scheme for finding bugs and saves Google a fortune in bug hunting.<\/p>\n<p>In total, all of Google&#8217;s bug bounty programs paid out a record <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2022\/02\/vulnerability-reward-program-2021-year.html\">$8.7 million<\/a> in vulnerability rewards in 2021, which is the most recent year for which
