Perpetual loading screen of doom. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4oMojU6eUR\">pic.twitter.com\/4oMojU6eUR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Laura Brown (@lcbrown91) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lcbrown91\/status\/1615359175172755460?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some celebrated the idea, although a cursory analysis of Twitter revealed most praise was issued for the positive effect the ban would have on student <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Beaniefromafar\/status\/1615373557953073152\" rel=\"noopener\">productivity.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, an op-ed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2023\/01\/15\/opinion-why-the-tiktok-ban-needs-university-exemptions\/69790058007\/\" rel=\"noopener\">written<\/a> by two professionals from UT&#8217;s Center for Media Engagement in the <i>Austin American Statesman<\/i> called the ban &#8220;overly broad,&#8221; for implementation by February 15.<\/p>\n<p>Neyland said that those seeking to use TikTok on campus could apply for an exception that would allow access on &#8220;an isolated, single-purpose university-issued device not connected to the university&#8217;s Wi-Fi or wired network.&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/evites.utdallas.edu\/announcements\/1-17-tiktok-guidance\/\" rel=\"noopener\">similar emails<\/a> went out to other universities within the UT system.<\/p>\n<p>The University of North Texas (UNT) has also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/news\/2023-01-17\/unt-blocks-access-to-tiktok-on-university-networks\" rel=\"noopener\">blocked<\/a> the app. Texas Tech and the University of Houston are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McGeeReports\/status\/1615453498409377792\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> waiting for state guidance on the use of TikTok on personal devices before issuing any bans.<\/p>\n<p>Over 30 states have barred access to TikTok on government devices and many of their universities remain in the crossfire. The University System of Georgia, the University of Oklahoma, and Auburn University in Alabama are among those <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/22\/tech\/tiktok-universities\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> to be restricting access.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>A bipartisan bill was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/14\/tiktok_ban_proposed_us\/\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> in mid-December that would block the app altogether in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>FCC commissioner Brendan Carr and FBI director Chris Wray have both campaigned against its use due to parent company ByteDance&#8217;s data collection policies and the app&#8217;s potential use for espionage.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/08\/texas_bans_indiana_tiktok_lawsuit\/\" rel=\"noopener\">maintained<\/a> in the past that it is working to &#8220;fully satisfy all reasonable US
