According to US prosecutors, this ransomware strain has been deployed against more than 1,000 organizations, and members of the gang have extracted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-nj\/pr\/russian-and-canadian-national-charged-participation-lockbit-global-ransomware-campaign\" rel=\"nofollow\">&#8220;tens of millions&#8221; of dollars<\/a> in ransom payments.<\/p>\n<p>Before thinking that the prolific ransomware-as-a-service group has turned over a new, nicer leaf, it&#8217;s worth remembering the gang&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chsf.fr\/declenchement-du-plan-blanc-dimanche-21-aout-2022\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">ransomware attack<\/a> over the summer against France&#8217;s Center Hospitalier Sud Francilien.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;LockBit were not so charitable when demanding $10k from a hospital in a low-income country nor when dealing with a French hospital,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrettCallow\/status\/1609314733009821697\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweeted<\/a> Emsisoft threat analyst Brett Callow. &#8220;Could their actions here be more about self-preservation than compassion?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>More recently, LockBit claimed to have stolen more than 15TB of data from the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redpacketsecurity.com\/lockbit-3-0-ransomware-victim-hacla-org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">threatened to release<\/a> the files if the affordable housing agency doesn&#8217;t pay up.<\/p>\n<p>And while the HACLA hasn&#8217;t confirmed the security event was, in fact, a ransomware attack, it did confirm a &#8220;cyber event&#8221; on New Year&#8217;s Eve disrupted its IT environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working diligently with third-party specialists to investigate the source of this disruption, confirm its impact on our systems, and to restore full functionality securely to our environment as soon as possible,&#8221; an HACLA spokesperson told <em>The Register<\/em>. &#8220;We remain committed to providing quality work as we continue to resolve this issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson didn&#8217;t answer any of our specific questions about the incident, including how the criminals breached the network, and what type of data \u2014 if any \u2014 was stolen in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, LockBit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/13\/california_finance_department_lockbit\/\"
