{"id":49483,"date":"2022-11-28T15:33:51","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T15:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/34076\/Hacker-Attempts-To-Sell-Data-Of-500m-WhatsApp-Users-On-Dark-Web.html"},"modified":"2022-11-28T15:33:51","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T15:33:51","slug":"hacker-attempts-to-sell-data-of-500m-whatsapp-users-on-dark-web","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/hacker-attempts-to-sell-data-of-500m-whatsapp-users-on-dark-web\/","title":{"rendered":"Hacker Attempts To Sell Data Of 500m WhatsApp Users On Dark Web"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hacker has allegedly posted a dataset to the dark web containing the personal information of almost 500 million WhatsApp users.<\/p>\n<p>In the post, which was uploaded to hacking forum BreachForums on November 16, the hacker claimed to be selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/attacks\/news\/over-12-million-credit-card-numbers-leaked-on-hacking-forum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up-to-date personal information<\/a> of 487 million WhatsApp users from 84 countries. In the post, the alleged hacker said those who bought the datasets would recieve \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/attacks\/news\/iotw-twitter-accused-of-covering-up-data-breach-that-affects-millions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very recent mobile numbers<\/a>\u201d of WhatsApp users.<\/p>\n<p>The leak was originally reported by technology news site CyberNews, which said it had \u201cinvestigated\u201d a sample of the data set provided by the hacker. According to CyberNews, the site was able to verify that 1,914 phone numbers provided by the malicious party did belong to WhatsApp users, meaning the hacker\u2019s claims were \u201clikely&#8230;to be true\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the bad actor, among the 487 million records are the details for 32 million US users, 11 million UK users and six million German users. CyberNews reported that the hacker had told them that they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/attacks\/news\/iotw-everything-we-know-about-the-medibank-data-leak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selling each of these data sets<\/a> for US$7,000, US$2,500 and US$2,000 respectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/plsadaptive.s3.amazonaws.com\/eco\/images\/channel_content\/images\/whatsappleakp9CRY4L9TGl3mw1ZEHZbxObdJPmk0ugftleZW1yN.png\" alt width=\"600\" height=\"334\"> <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/cybernews.com\/news\/whatsapp-data-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screenshot<\/a> shared by CyberNews of the alleged hacker&#8217;s post on BreachedForums&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The hacker did not explain how such a large amount of user data had been collected, saying only that they had \u201cused their strategy\u201d to obtain it.<\/p>\n<p>This news comes just days after it was reported that WhatsApp\u2019s parent company, Meta, had allegedly fired employees for breaking Facebook\u2019s terms of service by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/attacks\/news\/meta-fires-employees-for-allegedly-hacking-into-users-accounts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hacking into user\u2019s accounts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meta has since denied the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cshub.com\/attacks\/news\/mydeal-data-breach-impacts-22-million-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data leak<\/a>, with an unnamed spokesperson allegedly reaching out to multiple news sites who have reported on the leak on November 28. According to these news sources, the spokesperson has said that the CyberNews article is based on \u201cunsubstantiated screenshots\u201d and that there is \u201cno evidence of a \u2018data leak\u2019 from WhatsApp\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As of writing, there has been no official statement from WhatsApp or its parent company Meta on the alleged data leak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
