{"id":49376,"date":"2022-11-18T08:30:12","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T08:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/z-library-operators-arrested-charged-with-criminal-copyright-infringement\/"},"modified":"2022-11-18T08:30:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T08:30:12","slug":"z-library-operators-arrested-charged-with-criminal-copyright-infringement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/z-library-operators-arrested-charged-with-criminal-copyright-infringement\/","title":{"rendered":"Z-Library operators arrested, charged with criminal copyright infringement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Russian nationals accused of operating Z-Library \u2013 one of the largest online book piracy websites \u2013 have been charged with criminal copyright infringement, wire fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>According to a newly unsealed indictment, 33-year-old Anton Napolsky and 27-year-old Valeriia Ermakova, both of St Petersburg, Russia, operated the site between January 2018 and November 2022, allowing people to freely download pirated books and academic papers.<\/p>\n<p>The duo &#8220;did knowingly and willfully infringe a copyright for purposes of commercial advantage and private financial gain&#8221; by distributing copyrighted works &#8220;having a total retail value of more than $2,500,&#8221; according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edny\/press-release\/file\/1552516\/download\">court documents<\/a> [PDF].<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Y3j@JGfbOqoVqCwE5lTaEQAAAAM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Y3j@JGfbOqoVqCwE5lTaEQAAAAM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>They were arrested on November 3 in Cordoba, Argentina, at the request of the United States. It also allowed users to upload books and articles, many of which were copyrighted works.
