In partnership with law enforcement, our experts are analyzing the full extent of this data release,\u201d LAUSD\u2019s superintendent Alberto Carvalho <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LAUSDSup\/status\/1576636549994717184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1576636549994717184%7Ctwgr%5Edbc4fa2f49eedbdf7e0bdbcb3e00ce64e4ba7fd5%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftechcrunch.com%2F2022%2F10%2F03%2Flos-angeles-school-district-ransomware-data%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>wrote in a tweet<\/span><\/a> on Sunday, which included the number for a hotline set up for students and staff who may have questions about the incident.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"36.075949367089\"><\/p>\n<p>LAUSD is the second largest school district in the United States, Vice Society <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/06\/los-angeles-unified-school-district-ransomware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>hacked it last month<\/span><\/a>, causing \u201csignificant disruption\u201d to \u201caccess to email, computer systems, and applications,\u201d according to the school district. LAUSD is just one of more than 1,700 schools impacted with ransomware this year, according to Emsisoft, a cybersecurity company that tracks ransomware incidents.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"13.937007874016\"><\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/88qvmx\/how-ransomware-is-causing-chaos-in-american-schools\"><span>ransomware gangs have been very successful at targeting U.S. schools<\/span><\/a>, sending many of them into chaos.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28\"><\/p>\n<p>Hackers started releasing data after the school\u2019s superintendent publicly said they wouldn\u2019t pay the ransom or negotiate with the hackers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32.474358974359\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can tell you is that the demand\u2014any demand\u2014would be absurd. But this level of demand was, quite frankly, insulting. Paying ransom never guarantees the full recovery of data, and Los Angeles Unified believes public dollars are better spent on our students rather than capitulating to a nefarious and illicit crime syndicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28.6\"><\/p>\n<p>Some of the data appears to include Social Security Numbers, passport information, and tax forms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-10-02\/hackers-release-data-ahead-of-deadline-in-response-to-lausd-refusal-to-pay-ransom?utm_source=reddit.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>according to the Times<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/03\/los-angeles-school-district-ransomware-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Techcrunch<\/span><\/a>. The data, which reportedly amounts to around 500 gigabytes, was published on the gang\u2019s dark web site.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always delete documents and help to restore network [sic], we don\u2019t talk about companies that paid us,\u201d Vice Society told Techcrunch. \u201cNow LAUSD has lost 500GB of files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Releasing stolen data is a tried and true tactic for ransomware gangs. If the victim doesn\u2019t pay up, the hackers put even more pressure on the organization by releasing sensitive internal data.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point they didn&#8217;t really have a choice (since they decided against the choice to be decent human beings a long time ago),\u201d Allan Liska, a researcher at cybersecurity firm Recorded Future who tracks ransomware, told Motherboard in an online chat. \u201cLAUSD made it clear they weren&#8217;t going to pay and the school district is willing to deal with the fallout of the data being exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\"
