First of all, the blow will be aimed at enterprises of the energy sector. an apparent successor to the malware from the 2016 cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to launching cyberattacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, &#8220;the Kremlin also intends to increase the intensity of DDoS attacks on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine&#8217;s closest allies, primarily Poland and the Baltic states,&#8221; the Defense Ministry warned.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cso&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YzKP3rZx@OJTz2e-pRZQnwAAAFM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cso&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YzKP3rZx@OJTz2e-pRZQnwAAAFM&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/16\/record_european_ddos_attack_akamai\/\">and its friends<\/a> has been a favorite Russian tactic since even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/23\/ukraine_ddos_russia_malware\/\">before<\/a> the physical, illegal invasion happened, with these network traffic floods hitting an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/26\/kaspersky_ddos_up\/\">all-time high<\/a> during the first quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The latest cyberthreats come as Russian President Vladimir Putin drafts upwards of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-putin-donetsk-f64f9c91f24fc81bc8cc65e8bc7748f4\" rel=\"nofollow\">300,000 military reservists<\/a> while Ukraine reclaimed territory in the east and south in a surprise counteroffensive that started in August.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Putin has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/21\/world\/europe\/putin-ukraine-russia-nuclear.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">threatened<\/a> to use nuclear weapons amid the Russian military setbacks, though cyberattacks may be the safer option for the Kremlin, according to Google&#8217;s Mandiant threat intel team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Russia is under enormous pressure, and cyber attacks may give them a means to respond without risking serious military consequences,&#8221; John Hultquist, VP of intelligence analysis at Mandiant, told <em>The Register<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of the disruptive and destructive cyber attacks we have seen thus far have been disrupted, isolated, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/29\/wiper_attacks_jump_500_percent\/\">largely limited to Ukraine<\/a>, where there is intense focus,&#8221; There is still significant room for Russia to escalate, especially in regard to Ukraine&#8217;s allies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To date, Russia&#8217;s cyberattacks outside of Ukraine &#8220;have been very restrained,&#8221; Hultquist added.<\/p>\n<p>This, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-110a\" rel=\"nofollow\">repeated alerts<\/a> from CISA and other Five Eyes nations&#8217; cybersecurity agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/21\/five_eyes_russia\/\">urging critical infrastructure<\/a> owners and operators to be ready for attacks by crews backed by \u2013 or sympathetic to \u2013 Moscow amid strong Western opposition to Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Mandiant last Friday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mandiant.com\/resources\/blog\/gru-rise-telegram-minions\">published<\/a> research about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/11\/black_hat_hacktivists\/\" rel=\"noopener\">hacktivist groups<\/a> coordinating their operations with GRU-sponsored cyber threat actors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When asked if the Google-owned security biz&#8217;s team had observed any recent activity indicating planned cyberattacks against Western infrastructure and corporations, Hultquist told <em>The Register<\/em>: &#8220;We have not independently identified any specific threat to organizations outside of Ukraine, but these actors have a long history of staying below the radar.&#8221; \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a href=\"https:\/\/go.theregister.com\/feed\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/27\/russia_plans_massive_cyberattacks_ukraine\/\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will those be before or after the nuke strikes Putin keeps banging on about?
