{"id":48584,"date":"2022-09-22T15:39:36","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T15:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/33867\/AV-Used-By-Millions-Blocked-All-Google-Sites-By-Mistake-Sowing-Chaos.html"},"modified":"2022-09-22T15:39:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T15:39:36","slug":"av-used-by-millions-blocked-all-google-sites-by-mistake-sowing-chaos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/av-used-by-millions-blocked-all-google-sites-by-mistake-sowing-chaos\/","title":{"rendered":"AV Used By Millions Blocked All Google Sites By Mistake, Sowing Chaos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"32\">\n<div><picture class=\"responsive-image lazyloader--lazy lazyloader--lowres\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/articles\/632b46ef426dff0095d5288f\/lede\/1663781325741-facepalm-computer.jpeg?crop=1xw:0.8609xh;0xw,0.0831xh&amp;resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/articles\/632b46ef426dff0095d5288f\/lede\/1663781325741-facepalm-computer.jpeg?crop=1xw:0.8609xh;0xw,0.0831xh&amp;resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 0px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/articles\/632b46ef426dff0095d5288f\/lede\/1663781325741-facepalm-computer.jpeg?crop=1xw:0.8609xh;0xw,0.0831xh&amp;resize=20:*\"><img class=\"responsive-image__img\" alt=\"facepalm-computer\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<p>Image:&nbsp;Luis Alvarez\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"BodyComponentRenderer\" readability=\"65.272596843616\"><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28\"><\/p>\n<p>A popular antivirus that\u2019s used by millions of people around the world blocked all Google sites and services on Wednesday due to a mistake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31\"><\/p>\n<p>For around an hour on Wednesday morning, some people who had Malwarebytes antivirus installed on their computers could not visit any Google site or use services like Gmail or the Google Play Store, according to people who complained about the issue on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31.374384236453\"><\/p>\n<p>Naomi Clark, a game designer and teacher at the New York University\u2019s Game Center, who wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metasynthie\/status\/1572600233342681089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>on Twitter<\/span><\/a> about the issue, told Motherboard that websites \u201cwouldn&#8217;t load, as if blocked by a firewall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut even before that, my Malwarebytes installation started showing me system notifications that a malware site had been blocked, dozens per minute, all Google domains,\u201d she said. \u201cThat&#8217;s how I realized what must have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"25.723577235772\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metasynthie\/status\/1572600233342681089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Clark said<\/span><\/a> in a tweet that this issue \u201creminds you how Google ad-tracking IPs are peppered over absolutely everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Kyle Polley, who works in cybersecurity, said that his fianc\u00e9 was affected by the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe got what felt like an endless number of alerts that are along the lines of \u2018malwarebytes blocked &lt;browser name&gt; from &lt;google website&gt;\u2019 where &lt;browser name&gt; is either Chrome or Edge and &lt;google website&gt; was google.com, ads.google.com, play.google.com etc. Any Google site or any site that used Google in some way failed to work,\u201d he told Motherboard. \u201cShe had to turn off Malwarebytes in order to get work done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31\"><\/p>\n<p>Marcin Kleczynski, the CEO and co-founder of Malwarebytes, told Motherboard that it was \u201can accidental false positive. Fixed fairly quickly,\u201d and that it affected only Windows users.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately always a noisy event when you have millions of users,\u201d Kleczynski added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27\"><\/p>\n<p>Malwarbytes first acknowledged the issue around 11:30 a.m. ET in a tweet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27.9\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware of a temporary issue with the web filtering component of our product that may be blocking certain domains, including http:\/\/google.com. We are actively working on a fix and will update Twitter as soon as we have more information,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Malwarebytes\/status\/1572607583093161984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>the company wrote on Twitter<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>About an hour later, the company wrote that the issue was resolved, and that the update \u201cshould happen automatically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Kleczynski said the issue lasted around 30 minutes. Clark said it persisted for around an hour and a half for her. Several people responded to the company\u2019s tweets saying the issue was fixed complaining that it was still ongoing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27\"><\/p>\n<p>Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\"
