This includes $114 million in USDC and USDT stablecoins, it&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/wintermute-whacked-by-160m-hack-exploiting-known-vulnerability\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As has been the case with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/05\/nomad_white_hat_payback\/\">past cryptocurrency robberies<\/a>, Wintermute is treating the attack as a &#8220;white hat&#8221; operation, suggesting that if the attacker reaches out to the company they&#8217;re willing to not prosecute, and even potentially let the thief keep some of their stolen funds if the rest is returned.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yysw9VugdF4OXfX7Ca5IpgAAAQU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yysw9VugdF4OXfX7Ca5IpgAAAQU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Self-declared &#8220;on-chain sleuth&#8221; ZachXBT claims to have pinpointed the attacker&#8217;s Ethereum wallet with the precision and speed of Wintermute&#8217;s namesake, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zachxbt\/status\/1572136997241917440\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweeting<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/ethplorer.io\/address\/0xe74b28c2eae8679e3ccc3a94d5d0de83ccb84705\" rel=\"nofollow\">its address<\/a> just 11 minutes after Gaevoy&#8217;s first tweet announcing the hack. The stolen funds still appear to be in the wallet as of writing, and it&#8217;s unlikely whether Wintermute, or anyone else, can determine the responsible party from wallet address alone.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Register<\/em> has reached out to Wintermute to learn more about the attack and whether the crook has responded to its amnesty offer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"> <span>Welcome to the club, Wintermute<\/span><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/276920404_CONSENSUAL_HALLUCINATION_WILLIAM_GIBSON\">consensual hallucination<\/a> that is cryptocurrency has been well-fingered by cybercriminals, who routinely log off with tens of millions of dollars in tokens and coins during heists that can be nearly impossible to solve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, cryptocurrency bridge service Nomad was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/08\/02\/flash_mob_robs_nomad_crypto\/\">drained of $190.7 million<\/a> worth of crypto tokens used to handle cross-blockchain transfers, while $320 million in Ethereum was stolen from bridge service Wormhole early this year. Additional hacks have netted criminals <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/the-aftermath-of-axie-infinity-s-650m-ronin-bridge-hack\" rel=\"nofollow\">as much as $600 million<\/a>, which was stolen from the Ronin Bridge service in April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain security company CertiK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20220113005054\/en\/CertiK-Releases-2021-State-of-DeFi-Security-Report\" rel=\"nofollow\">estimates<\/a> that approximately $1.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency was lost due to hacks and scams in 2021 alone, a 2,500 percent increase from 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The FBI has urged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/01\/fbi_cybercrime_defi_cryptocurrency\/\">caution around DeFi<\/a>, saying that cyber criminals &#8220;are increasingly exploiting vulnerabilities in DeFi platforms to steal cryptocurrency, causing investors to lose money.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Feds&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Media\/Y2022\/PSA220829\" rel=\"nofollow\">warning<\/a>, nearly $1.3 billion was stolen from DeFi operations between January and March of this year \u2013 the same as the entirety of 2021. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
