{"id":48126,"date":"2022-08-23T13:23:03","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T13:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/33762\/If-You-Havent-Patched-Zimbra-Holes-By-Now-Assume-Youre-Toast.html"},"modified":"2022-08-23T13:23:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T13:23:03","slug":"if-you-havent-patched-zimbra-holes-by-now-assume-youre-toast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/if-you-havent-patched-zimbra-holes-by-now-assume-youre-toast\/","title":{"rendered":"If You Haven&#8217;t Patched Zimbra Holes By Now, Assume You&#8217;re Toast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Organizations that didn&#8217;t immediately patch their Zimbra email systems should assume miscreants have already found and exploited the bugs, and should start hunting for malicious activity across IT networks, according to Uncle Sam.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ncas\/alerts\/aa22-228a\">security alert<\/a> updated on Monday, the US government&#8217;s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) warned that cybercriminals are actively exploiting five vulnerabilities in the Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) to break into both government and private-sector networks. This high-severity bug can be used by an unauthenticated user to ultimately steal email account credentials in cleartext form with no user interaction.<\/p>\n<p>SonarSource security researchers discovered the flaw in March, and published a detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.sonarsource.com\/zimbra-mail-stealing-clear-text-credentials-via-memcache-injection\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">technical analysis<\/a> that explained how an attacker could inject arbitrary memcache commands into a targeted instance, causing an overwrite of arbitrary cached entries, allowing them to steal account credentials.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/patches&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YwX77O-utdv8fKVIT1WsiQAAAEQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/patches&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YwX77O-utdv8fKVIT1WsiQAAAEQ&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>In June, the security biz publicly released proof-of-concept (POC) exploits for this vulnerability. &#8220;Due to the POC and ease of exploitation, CISA and the MS-ISAC expect to see widespread exploitation of unpatched ZCS instances in government and private networks,&#8221; the Feds warned.<\/p>\n<p>Another high-severity vulnerability, <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-27925\" rel=\"nofollow\">CVE-2022-27925<\/a>, which also received a 7.4 CVSS rating, could allow an authenticated user with admin privileges to upload arbitrary files, thus leading to directory traversal. When combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-37042\" rel=\"nofollow\">CVE-2022-37042<\/a>, CVE-2022-27925 could be exploited without valid administrative credentials, according to researchers from Volexity, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volexity.com\/blog\/2022\/08\/10\/mass-exploitation-of-unauthenticated-zimbra-rce-cve-2022-27925\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">reported<\/a> more than 1,000 Zimbra email servers had been compromised in attacks chaining the two vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"> <span>Further big problems found<\/span><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>CVE-2022-37042 is a critical remote authentication bypass vulnerability that received a 9.8 CVSS rating. Zimbra issued fixes for both of these bugs in late July.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-30333\" rel=\"nofollow\">CVE-2022-30333<\/a> is a 7.5 rated high-severity flaw in RARLAB UnRAR, used by Zimbra, before 6.12 on Linux and Unix-flavored systems that allows miscreants to write to files during an extract operation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the case of Zimbra, successful exploitation gives an attacker access to every single email sent and received on a compromised email server. They can silently backdoor login functionalities and steal the credentials of an organization&#8217;s users,&#8221; according to SonarSource, which <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.sonarsource.com\/zimbra-pre-auth-rce-via-unrar-0day\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">discovered<\/a> the bug. &#8220;With this access, it is likely that they can escalate their access to even more sensitive, internal services of an organization.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>To fix this issue, Zimbra made <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.zimbra.com\/wiki\/Zimbra_Releases\/9.0.0\/P25\" rel=\"nofollow\">configuration changes<\/a> to use the 7zip program instead of UnRAR.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re told that a miscreant is selling an exploit kit for CVE-2022-30333, and there&#8217;s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/files\/167989\/Zimbra-UnRAR-Path-Traversal.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Metasploit module<\/a> that creates a RAR file, which then can be emailed to a Zimbra server to exploit this flaw.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth known Zimbra vulnerability under active exploit, <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-24682\" rel=\"nofollow\">CVE-2022-24682<\/a>, is a medium severity cross-site scripting bug that allows crooks to steal session cookie files. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volexity.com\/blog\/2022\/02\/03\/operation-emailthief-active-exploitation-of-zero-day-xss-vulnerability-in-zimbra\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Volexity<\/a> discovered this one, too, and Zimbra <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.zimbra.com\/2022\/02\/hotfix-available-5-feb-for-zero-day-exploit-vulnerability-in-zimbra-8-8-15\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">patched<\/a> it in February.<\/p>\n<p>In its advisory, CISA recommends security teams &#8220;especially at organizations that did not immediately update their ZCS instances upon patch release&#8221; search for any signs of malicious activity using a handful of third-party detection signatures.<\/p>\n<p>This includes the following indicator of compromise: connections to or from 207.148.76[.]235, which is a Cobalt Strike command-and-control domain.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday, CISA updated the advisory with new snort signatures that businesses can deploy to detect signs of cybercriminals on their network.<\/p>\n<p>And finally the Feds suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/volexity\/threat-intel\/blob\/main\/2022\/2022-08-10%20Mass%20exploitation%20of%20(Un)authenticated%20Zimbra%20RCE%20CVE-2022-27925\/yara.yar\" rel=\"nofollow\">deploying<\/a> third-party YARA rules to detect potential webshells. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
