CYBER is Motherboard&#8217;s podcast and reporting on the dark underbelly of the internet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28\"><\/p>\n<p>Hackers claiming to be affiliated with the collective Anonymous defaced a Chinese government website in retaliation for alleged cyberattacks on several Taiwanese government websites.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"25.158940397351\"><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the hackers defaced the website replacing its content with a message in support of House speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/wxnn4b\/how-flightradar24-helps-people-track-nancy-pelosi-taylor-swift-and-russian-oligarchs-private-flights\"><span>visit to the country<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"26.672932330827\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaiwan numbah wan!\u201d&nbsp; the message, which is a racist imitation of a Chinese accent that has <a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/taiwan-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>become a gaming meme<\/span><\/a>, read. \u201cThis hack is a retaliation of the DDoS attacks on the presidential website,\u201d it continued, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220803000132\/http:\/\/www.hljskl.gov.cn\/new\/wfile\/wfile_1_20228375549.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>an archived version of the site<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"body-image\" data-component=\"ImageBlock\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"body-image__img\">\n<div><picture class=\"responsive-image lazyloader--lazy lazyloader--lowres\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1659542492463-screen-shot-2022-08-03-at-115535-am.png?resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1659542492463-screen-shot-2022-08-03-at-115535-am.png?resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 0px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1659542492463-screen-shot-2022-08-03-at-115535-am.png?resize=20:*\"><img class=\"responsive-image__img\" alt=\"A screenshot of the defacemed posted on the website of China's Heilongjiang Society Scientific Community Federation. (Image: Motherboard)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>The hackers targeted the site of China&#8217;s Heilongjiang Society Scientific Community Federations, a government agency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"25.886597938144\"><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Taiwan\u2019s president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberscoop.com\/taiwan-china-ddos-pelosi-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>wrote on Facebook<\/span><\/a> that the president\u2019s official website went down for 20 minutes because of an \u201coverseas DDoS attack.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tingtingliuTVBS\/status\/1554436870939242497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>According to a local journalist<\/span><\/a>, the attack flooded the website with traffic \u201c200 times that of a normal day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>Later in the day, other Taiwanese government websites went down, fueling speculation that the Chinese government may be behind the attacks. But cybersecurity experts were skeptical not only of the Chinese government attribution, but of the actual cyberattacks too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32.47191011236\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are uncoordinated, random, moral-less attacks against websites that Chinese hacktivists use to get their message across,\u201d Johannes Ullrich, Dean of Research at the SANS Technology Institute, a cybersecurity education and research organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/attacks-taiwan-websites-likely-work-chinese-hacktivists-researchers-2022-08-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>told Reuters<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-component=\"QuoteBlock\" class=\"abc__quote abc__quote--blockquote\" readability=\"10.272058823529\">\n<p><em><strong>Do you have information about the activities of Chinese, Taiwanese, or hacktivist hacking groups?
