Jones pleaded guilty on March 24.<\/p>\n<p>According to his indictment [<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2022\/07\/18\/randy_xavier_jones_indictment_pacer.pdf\">PDF<\/a>] from August 2021, Jones defrauded several state and federal COVID-19 relief programs between July and September 2020 by claiming monetary benefits he wasn&#8217;t entitled to receive. Wingfield then used, or attempted to use, these fraudulently obtained debit cards to withdraw money using ATMs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YtZI-BqM7R9txQkqdOSs6wAAAMk&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YtZI-BqM7R9txQkqdOSs6wAAAMk&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>In April, Wingfield pleaded guilty [<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2022\/07\/18\/rolanda_wingfield_judgement_pacer.pdf\">PDF<\/a>] to one count of access device fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these court cases were prosecuted under the Department of Justice&#8217;s COVID Fraud Enforcement Task Force, formed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, in an attempt to coordinate government agencies&#8217; work to prosecute criminals perpetrating these schemes and recover, by some estimates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2022\/04\/22\/justice-department-pandemic-fraud-enforcement-00027092\" rel=\"nofollow\">hundreds of billions of dollars lost<\/a> to pandemic related fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not every COVID-related scheme involves identity theft, but this type of crime has been a boon to crooks during the ongoing pandemic. In fact, identity theft made the top-five list for the most reported cyberscams, according to the FBI&#8217;s most recent annual Internet Crime Report.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/05\/05\/fbi_cyber_scams\/\">report<\/a> with 2021&#8217;s statistics recorded 51,629 identity-theft complaints last year, compared to 43,330 in 2020 \u2014 that&#8217;s a 19 percent increase.
