{"id":47563,"date":"2022-07-18T15:00:05","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/albanian-government-websites-go-dark-after-cyberattack\/"},"modified":"2022-07-18T15:00:05","modified_gmt":"2022-07-18T15:00:05","slug":"albanian-government-websites-go-dark-after-cyberattack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/albanian-government-websites-go-dark-after-cyberattack\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanian government websites go dark after cyberattack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Albania&#8217;s online public services and websites have gone dark following what appears to be a cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/europe\/20220718\/355ae2b2978b456c8c89211b44308ad3\/c.html\">statement<\/a> from the Albanian National Agency for Information Society (AKSHI), the websites of the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office and Parliament have both been pulled as has, critically, the e-Albania portal used by residents and foreigners alike to access public services.<\/p>\n<p>The latter is particularly alarming since the Albanian government <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/politics\/short_news\/albania-to-go-digital-as-of-may\/\">closed many in-person services<\/a> in favor of the e-Albania portal in May 2022.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YtWd8RP5WYR8RBgaLfygOwAAABc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YtWd8RP5WYR8RBgaLfygOwAAABc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Albanian media <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/albaniandailynews.com\/news\/pm-s-office-issues-statement-on-govt-online-systems-attack\">reported<\/a> that the attack was detected on Friday, and bore some resemblance to those carried out in Ukraine and Germany. Indeed, hundreds of computers in the war-torn country were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/02\/23\/ukraine_wiper_malware\/\" rel=\"noopener\">infected<\/a> with data-wiping Windows malware earlier this year and cybersecurity agencies <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/04\/21\/five_eyes_russia\/\" rel=\"noopener\">warned in April<\/a> that critical infrastructure should be ready for cyberattacks as groups motivated both by financial incentive and political ideology eyed international targets.<\/p>\n<p>Other nations suffering at the hands of hackers include Costa Rica, which found itself <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/06\/security_in_brief\/\" rel=\"noopener\">the subject of ransomware attacks<\/a> by the notorious Conti group.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on Albania was appears similar to that which <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deutsche-windtechnik.com\/press-information\/item\/463-Cyber-attack-on-Deutsche-Windtechnik\">knocked out the IT systems of Deutsche Windtechnik in April 2022<\/a>. While the wind turbines looked after by the company were undamaged, it did take a few days before normal operation could be resumed.<\/p>\n<p>Albania&#8217;s woes serve as a reminder that redundancy needs to be considered, in addition to the security needs of IT infrastructure. And maybe a wholesale shift online might not be such a smart move if, a mere few months later, your new e-Portal gets taken out by miscreants.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Pinson-Roxburgh, CEO of Defense.com, commented: &#8220;The large-scale cyberattack that took down the Albanian government&#8217;s digital services illustrates the high stakes at play in our digital and connected world. While we have seen independent hacking groups targeting the IT infrastructure of nations in the past, it is unusual that an autonomous group would be able to operate on this scale. Nation-state actors on the other hand certainly have the capabilities to target and unsettle the digital operations of other countries. The fact that the digital infrastructure of an entire country can be attacked and disrupted should serve as a stark warning for businesses. Such attacks have the potential to spiral and cause far-reaching consequences.
