{"id":47282,"date":"2022-06-27T23:30:34","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T23:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/openssl-3-0-5-awaits-release-to-fix-potential-worse-than-heartbleed-flaw\/"},"modified":"2022-06-27T23:30:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T23:30:34","slug":"openssl-3-0-5-awaits-release-to-fix-potential-worse-than-heartbleed-flaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/openssl-3-0-5-awaits-release-to-fix-potential-worse-than-heartbleed-flaw\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenSSL 3.0.5 awaits release to fix potential worse-than-Heartbleed flaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest version of OpenSSL v3, a widely used open-source library for secure networking using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, contains a memory corruption vulnerability that imperils x64 systems with Intel&#8217;s Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (AVX512).<\/p>\n<p>OpenSSL 3.0.4 was released on June 21 to address <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openssl.org\/news\/secadv\/20220621.txt\">a command-injection vulnerability<\/a> (CVE-2022-2068) that was not fully addressed with a previous patch (CVE-2022-1292).<\/p>\n<p>But this release itself needs further fixing. OpenSSL 3.0.4 &#8220;is susceptible to remote memory corruption which can be triggered trivially by an attacker,&#8221; according to security researcher <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/guidovranken.com\/2022\/06\/27\/notes-on-openssl-remote-memory-corruption\/\">Guido Vranken<\/a>. It has been <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/pull\/18626\/commits\/71ad6a8da3e39bd4caf5c6c767287ddd9bce8bae\">fixed<\/a>, but OpenSSL 3.0.5 has not yet been released.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Linux distributions like Gentoo have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625#issuecomment-1163876651\">not yet rolled out OpenSSL 3.0.4<\/a> as a result of this bug and a test build failure bug. So they <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/packages.gentoo.org\/packages\/dev-libs\/openssl\">include OpenSSL 3.0.3<\/a>, with its command injection flaw.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625\">GitHub Issues thread<\/a> discussing the bug, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Mr\u00e1z, software developer at the OpenSSL Foundation, argues the bug shouldn&#8217;t be classified as a security vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do not think this is a security vulnerability,&#8221; he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625#issuecomment-1163977966\">said<\/a>. &#8220;It is just a serious bug making [the] 3.0.4 release unusable on AVX512 capable machines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Xi Ruoyao, a PhD student at Xidian University, also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625#issuecomment-1165180326\">said<\/a> he disagreed with the policy of calling every heap buffer overflow a security flaw. Vim, he said, started doing so this year and the result has been something like ten &#8220;high severity&#8221; vim CVEs every month without any proof-of-concept exploit code.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/patches&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YrphReSu7zV4ZZlR0hykCAAAAE8&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I think we shouldn&#8217;t mark a bug as &#8216;security vulnerability&#8217; unless we have some evidence showing it can (or at least, may) be exploited,&#8221; he wrote, adding that nonetheless 3.0.5 should be released as soon as possible because it&#8217;s very severe.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Gaynor, software resilience engineer with the US Digital Service, however, argues to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure I understand how it&#8217;s not a security vulnerability,&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625#issuecomment-1165012549\">responded<\/a> Gaynor. &#8220;It&#8217;s a heap buffer overflow that&#8217;s triggerable by things like RSA signatures, which can easily happen in remote contexts (e.g. a TLS handshake).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gaynor urged releasing the fix quickly. &#8220;I think this issue qualifies as a CRITICAL within OpenSSL&#8217;s vulnerability severity policy, and it makes it effectively impossible for users to upgrade to 3.0.4 to obtain its security fixes,&#8221; he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openssl\/openssl\/issues\/18625#issuecomment-1163874924\">said<\/a> \u00ae.<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
