observed Chris Wysopal, a security researcher and CTO of Veracode, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/weldpond\/status\/1540306857943760896\">via Twitter<\/a>. &#8220;In software security, vulnerabilities often occur in the complexity of two different systems interfacing with each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Barrett, who <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.harmony.one\/funding\/1000-contributors-78m\/matt\">contributes to project<\/a> and appears to have taken on a communications role for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/harmony-one\">Mountain View, California-based Harmony<\/a> but isn&#8217;t listed on the organization&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.harmony.one\/team-founding-story\">team webpage<\/a>, described the incident in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/harmony-one\/harmonys-horizon-bridge-hack-1e8d283b6d66\">a post<\/a> to Medium.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YrZjVrx-KohlIBWLNIeIFwAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YrZjVrx-KohlIBWLNIeIFwAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Barrett said in the wake of the attack, Harmony&#8217;s security and exchange partners were notified, as was the FBI, in the hope the culprit and a way to recover the funds, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x0d043128146654c7683fbf30ac98d7b2285ded00\">still sitting<\/a> unlaundered in a visible crypto wallet, can be identified.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Harmony believes that focusing on decentralized bridges is an essential step forward for Web3,&#8221; said Barrett. &#8220;This incident is a humbling and unfortunate reminder of how our work is paramount to the future of this space, and how much of our work remains ahead of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Horizon bridge was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.harmony.one\/home\/general\/bridges\/horizon-bridge\/audit\">audited<\/a> by Peck Shield, a blockchain security firm, in October 21, 2020. The report identified five issues with the bridge&#8217;s smart contract implementation: two high severity, two low severity, and one informational, all of which are said to have been fixed. The audit includes a disclaimer noting that the findings do not guarantee the non-existence of other security concerns.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YrZjVrx-KohlIBWLNIeIFwAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/cybercrime&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YrZjVrx-KohlIBWLNIeIFwAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>An individual involved in cryptocurrency trading <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_apedev\/status\/1510007663832223751\">raised questions<\/a> in a Twitter thread about the Horizon bridge back in April and noted that the audit <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_apedev\/status\/1510007671843393538\">didn&#8217;t assess some aspects of the system<\/a>. This person <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_apedev\/status\/1540315286062202881\">speculates<\/a> that that the hack was likely accomplished through a server\/key compromise or social engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony has not yet identified how the attack was carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Green, a cryptography professor at Johns Hopkins University, expressed concern that the poor security of decentralized finance ventures amounts to a slush fund for hostile nations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s increasingly obvious that there are attackers (including state-sponsored attackers) making lists of vulnerable &#8216;web3&#8217; services, ordered by target value and system vulnerability,&#8221; he said <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthew_d_green\/status\/1540336955187134464\">via Twitter<\/a>. &#8220;And they are working systematically down those lists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who is systematically defending this area to keep North Korea from collecting $100s of millions to use in its missile program?&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthew_d_green\/status\/1540337522772959234\">he asked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Lazarus Group, a cybercrime gang associated with North Korea&#8217;s Reconnaissance General Bureau, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/blog\/further-sanctions-against-north-koreas-lazarus-group-for-laundering-stolen-ronin-funds\">was sanctioned<\/a> for involvement with the Ronin Network theft.<\/p>\n<p>The Grift Counter, a running total cryptocurrency losses since 2021 maintained by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"
