{"id":46769,"date":"2022-05-20T14:06:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T14:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2c4837ca-5713-40a3-a93c-30087a3216ca"},"modified":"2022-05-20T14:06:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T14:06:00","slug":"microsofts-out-of-band-patch-fixes-windows-ad-authentication-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsofts-out-of-band-patch-fixes-windows-ad-authentication-failures\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft&#8217;s out-of-band patch fixes Windows AD authentication failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"share-bar-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"full-byline\">\n<div class=\"author-avatars\"> <a rel=\"author\" class=\"thumb author-modal-open\" data-component=\"authorModal\" data-author-modal-options=\"{&quot;selector&quot;:&quot;liam-tung-modal&quot;,&quot;hoverSelector&quot;:&quot;.full-byline&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/meet-the-team\/eu\/liam-tung\/\" data-vanity-rewritten=\"true\"> <span class=\"img \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/edd135640c2822791e2a2387e6b68798e65dbe9b\/2014\/07\/22\/b17789dd-1174-11e4-9732-00505685119a\/liam-tung.jpg?width=50&amp;height=50&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=webp\" class alt=\"Liam Tung\" height=\"50\" width=\"50\"><\/span> <\/a> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft has released an out-of-band patch to fix authentication failures on Windows after installing the May 10, 2022 security update on Windows Server domain controllers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new update should fix authentication failures that affected services such as <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\/networking\/technologies\/nps\/nps-top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Network Policy Server (NPS)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/previous-versions\/windows\/it-pro\/windows-server-2012-R2-and-2012\/dn614140(v=ws.11)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Routing and Remote access Service (RRAS)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/win32\/nps\/ias-radius-authentication-and-accounting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Radius<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\/networking\/technologies\/extensible-authentication-protocol\/network-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/openspecs\/windows_protocols\/ms-peap\/a128a089-0919-41a5-a0c2-9f25ef28289d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An issue has been found related to how the mapping of certificates to machine accounts is being handled by the domain controller,&#8221; Microsoft explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-warns-this-botnet-has-new-tricks-to-target-linux-and-windows-systems\/\"><strong>Microsoft warns: This botnet has new tricks to target Linux and Windows systems<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/cisa-temporarily-removes-windows-vulnerability-from-its-must-patch-list\/\">pulled Microsoft&#8217;s fix for the bug CVE-2022-26925<\/a> from its list of known exploited vulnerabilities that federal agencies must patch within a given timeframe. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bug was a Local Security Authority (LSA) spoofing vulnerability. Details of the bug have been publicly disclosed and exploits exist for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An unauthenticated attacker could &#8220;call a method on the LSARPC interface and coerce the domain controller to authenticate to the attacker using NTLM. This security update detects anonymous connection attempts in LSARPC and disallows it,&#8221; Microsoft said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bug would have a severity score of 9.8 when it is chained with NTLM Relay Attacks on Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS), Microsoft added. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The authentication issue was only caused after installing the May 10 update on Windows Server domain controllers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Any previously applied workarounds are no longer needed, according to Microsoft. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s out-of-band patch also fixes a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-10-21h2#2830msgdesc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">separate issue<\/a> caused by the April <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5011831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5011831<\/a> or later updates that stopped some Microsoft Store apps from opening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cumulative updates with the out-of-band fix are available for Windows Server 2022 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5015013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5015013<\/a>), Windows Server, version 20H2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5015020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5015020<\/a>), Windows Server 2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5015018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5015018<\/a>), and Windows Server 2016 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5015019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5015019<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has also released standalone updates for Windows Server 2012 R2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5014986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5014986<\/a>), Windows Server 2012 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5014991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5014991<\/a>), Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5014987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5014987<\/a>), Windows Server 2008 SP2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5014990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">KB5014990<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Admins can manually import the
