The 11 people listed in the sanctions saw any assets in the US blocked and their financial transactions in the US criminalized.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm1088\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the US Department of Treasury, Lee was sanctioned for &#8220;being involved in coercing, arresting, detaining, or imprisoning individuals under the authority of the National Security Law, as well as being involved in its development, adoption, or implementation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YmIBB-DWXA6NNYI5CH2ukgAAAMU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YmIBB-DWXA6NNYI5CH2ukgAAAMU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>The document noted that Lee, a former police officer, introduced a new police unit dedicated to enforcing the Hong Kong National Security Law, inclusive of intelligence gathering and investigation capabilities. Those capabilities were used to crack down on pro-democracy protesters.<\/p>\n<p>According to the US Department of the Treasury, Lam received her sanctions for &#8220;for implementing Beijing&#8217;s policies of suppression of freedom and democratic processes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson from YouTube&#8217;s parent company, Google, told <i>The Register<\/i>:<\/p>\n<p>Lee, whose <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=117299097614386&amp;id=109248991752730\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook account<\/a> still stands, albeit demonetized, wrote in Chinese on his remaining social media and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlee2022.hk\/2022\/04\/20\/%e5%9b%9e%e6%87%89youtube%e9%a0%bb%e9%81%93%e8%a2%ab%e7%84%a1%e7%90%86%e9%97%9c%e9%96%89\/\" rel=\"noopener\">election website<\/a>: &#8220;The so-called sanctions imposed on me by the United States are bullying, and their unreasonable behavior will only make me more convinced that what I have done is right. I will ignore it and scoff at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Beijing had its own thoughts on the matter. According to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/politics\/article\/3175041\/hong-kong-chief-executive-election-2022-beijing-lashes-out\" rel=\"noopener\">South China Morning Post<\/a>, foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin accused Google of helping the US government meddle in the affairs of other countries in a Thursday press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Lam&#8217;s top advisor, Bernard Chan, called the situation &#8220;unfortunate,&#8221; an &#8220;isolated incident,&#8221; and unlikely to affect the election.
