In recent years, we&#8217;ve seen the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ransomware-attacks-against-hospitals-are-having-some-very-grim-consequences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ransomware outbreaks<\/a> in hospitals; software vulnerabilities including those that could, in theory, stop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/fda-forces-st-jude-pacemaker-recall-to-patch-security-vulnerabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pacemaker from working<\/a>, and countless patient data leaks at providers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>However, unless there&#8217;s a clear-cut financial benefit, many cyberattackers will ignore medical devices in favor of hitting businesses likely to provide them with illicit revenue. <\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean that vendors, or defenders, should ignore vulnerabilities and security issues surrounding medicine, especially as digital health, personalized medicine, and remote care continue to develop. <\/p>\n<p>Medical devices can fall short of adequate security measures, as recently revealed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cynerio.com\/jekyllbot-5-command-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Cynerio<\/a>&#8216;s public disclosure of <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.website-files.com\/5d2ad783e06f4c19469d363a\/625551dd440d0b187fa96d38_JekyllBot-5-Vulnerability-Disclosure-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Jekyllbot:5<\/a> (.PDF), five critical vulnerabilities in Aethon <a href=\"https:\/\/aethon.com\/mobile-robots-for-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">TUG robots<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read on: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/black-hat-how-your-pacemaker-becomes-an-unintended-insider-threat-in-secure-spaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Black Hat: How your pacemaker could become an insider threat to national security<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aethon&#8217;s mobile robots are autonomous devices used by hundreds of hospitals to perform basic, repetitive tasks to augment existing workforces. <\/p>\n<p>TUGs run errands including medicine delivery, cleaning, and dropping off linen and other supplies to healthcare professionals. <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2019\/11\/robots-join-the-workforce-at-the-new-stanford-hospital-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Stanford<\/a> is a healthcare provider that uses the robots in drug deliveries, which can move at 2mph down pre-determined routes. <\/p>\n<p>According to Cynerio, the five vulnerabilities allow attackers to take over a robot&#8217;s activities, including taking photos; snooping on the hospital in real-time via camera feeds, accessing patient records; disrupting or blocking drug delivery, all of which could impact patient care. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, the team says the bugs could be used to hijack user sessions or &#8220;take control of the robot&#8217;s movement and crash them into people or objects, or use them to harass patients and staff.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The vulnerabilities, now assigned CVEs, are below: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-1066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-1066<\/a> (CVSS 8.2): Missing authorization checks, allowing unauthenticated attackers to add or modify existing user accounts<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-26423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-26423<\/a> (CVSS 8.2): Missing authorization checks, allowing free access to hashed credentials<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-1070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-1070<\/a> (CVSS 9.8): Failures to verify end users, permitting attackers to access the TUG Home Base Server and take control of connected robots<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-27494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-27494<\/a> (CVSS 7.6): User-controlled input is not neutralized, allowing XSS attackers to trigger on report pages<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-1059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-1059<\/a> (CVSS 7.6): User-controlled input is not neutralized before being shown in a web portal, and so Fleet page users may be subject to reflected XSS attacks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The critical flaws were found during an audit on behalf of a client healthcare provider. While Cynerio&#8217;s customer had not connected their robots to the internet &#8212; and, therefore, they were safe from active exploit &#8212; the cybersecurity firm said &#8220;several&#8221; hospitals had internet-connected robots that could be remotely controlled in the Cynerio Live research lab. <\/p>\n<p>The vendor was notified of the vulnerabilities through the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). <\/p>\n<p>Cynerio worked with Aethon to develop suitable patches, and the latest version of TUG firmware contains fixes.
