{"id":46152,"date":"2022-04-11T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-11T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/8aa0e8e3-735f-4c2a-b90b-4cf95f3b5ba8"},"modified":"2022-04-11T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-04-11T13:00:00","slug":"xss-vulnerability-patched-in-directus-data-engine-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/xss-vulnerability-patched-in-directus-data-engine-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"XSS vulnerability patched in Directus data engine platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been patched in the popular Directus engine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image alignRight image-medium shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/xss-vulnerability-patched-in-directus-data-engine-platform\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"programming-code-small.jpg\" height=\"auto\" width=\"370\" data-original=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/0210a4a588d2c06aaaa2b8ab80f5720b0ec545ae\/2022\/04\/11\/eb4b9cb5-67e2-4016-8775-764067232995\/programming-code-small.jpg?width=370&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\"><\/span><noscript><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/0210a4a588d2c06aaaa2b8ab80f5720b0ec545ae\/2022\/04\/11\/eb4b9cb5-67e2-4016-8775-764067232995\/programming-code-small.jpg?width=370&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" class alt=\"programming-code-small.jpg\" height=\"auto\" width=\"370\"><\/span><\/noscript><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/directus.io\/platform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Directus<\/a> is an open source, modular content management system (CMS) promoted as a &#8220;flexible powerhouse for engineers.&#8221; The platform can be used to wrap SQL databases with GraphQL and REST APIs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Directus has achieved 14.9k stars on GitHub and there are approximately 1,700 forks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Discovered by Synopsys Cybersecurity Research Center (CyRC) researcher David Johansson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synopsys.com\/blogs\/software-security\/cyrc-advisory-directus-xss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">the vulnerability<\/a> is tracked as CVE-2022-24814 and can lead to account compromise.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Impacting Directus v9.6.0 and earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-24814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-24814<\/a> was found in the file upload functionality of the CMS.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unauthorized JavaScript can be executed by inserting an iframe into the rich text HTML interface that links to a file uploaded HTML file that loads another uploaded JS file in its script tag,&#8221; Directus <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/directus\/directus\/security\/advisories\/GHSA-xmjj-3c76-5w84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">explained<\/a>. &#8220;This satisfies the regular content security policy header, which in turn allows the file to run any arbitrary JS.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>According to Synopsys, authenticated users can create a stored XSS attack that triggers when other users try to view &#8220;certain&#8221; collections or files on the platform.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>A similar issue, tracked under CVEs <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-22116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-22116<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/CVE-2022-22117b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2022-22117<\/a>, was previously disclosed in the Directus App. However, the mitigation improvements did not go far enough and so could be bypassed, the researchers added.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Synopsys disclosed its findings to Directus on January 28. The platform&#8217;s team triaged the vulnerability and released v3.7.0 on March 18 to resolve the security issue. In addition, Directus improved a &#8220;very permissive&#8217; default value for <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/directus\/directus\/security\/advisories\/GHSA-g27j-74fp-xfpr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CORS configuration<\/a> which could lead to unauthorized access when configurations had not been changed.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/directus\/directus\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">build<\/a> is v3.9.0.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Synopsys would like to commend the Directus team for their responsiveness and for addressing this vulnerability in a timely manner,&#8221; the company said.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>In related news, VMware published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/vmware-warns-of-critical-remote-code-execution-bug-in-workspace-one-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">security advisory<\/a> on April 6 urging customers to patch software including VMware Workspace ONE Access, Identity Manager (vIDM), and vRealize Automation (vRA) to patch bugs leading to remote code execution
