Beloved by internet readers and hated by its high-profile targets, the site mysteriously went down in 2012, and although it came back for a while, it never quite recovered and was eventually sold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>The mystery of Hipster Runoff\u2019s original downfall might be solved, however, as Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, recently claimed she hacked the site and destroyed its backups after photos of her at a party appeared on the site and went viral.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Hipster Runoff ran a photo of Grimes kissing another woman, which she claims was leaked. This apparently pissed her off enough to attack the site and shut it down, she said in an interview last month with Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"43\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack in the day, like before the woke era, I actually got canceled for this,\u201d she said in the interview, referring to the photo. \u201cI was trying to be like, all integrity, and start my career, and it was like \u2018Grimes Gone Wild\u2019 or something, and it was just this like, super wack, mean story, and it was like this meme which was going all over the internet,\u201d she says. She\u2019d just released her breakout album <em>Visions<\/em> a few months prior, which won a bunch of awards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"36\"><\/p>\n<p>Grimes claims in the interview that a friend, who worked for a video game company, helped her issue a DDOS attack against Hipster Runoff (a method for overwhelming a website\u2019s servers with fake traffic until it stops working) and \u201cbasically blackmail them,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were like, we\u2019re not gonna let you put your site back up until you take the story down. And he did in fact take the story down, and it was like, my coolest hacker moment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28.229299363057\"><\/p>\n<p>Whether or not the photos were actually \u201cleaked,\u201d as she claims, is unclear; infosec professional Jackie Singh <a href=\"https:\/\/hackingbutlegal.com\/grimes-admits-to-blackmail-extortion-and-hacking-in-vanity-fair-video-interview-a1e3a3d41a4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a blog post<\/a> about her recent admission that the photos may have first appeared on a NYC photographer\u2019s popular party-pictures website (which published an accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/lastnightsparty-Where-Were-Last-Night\/dp\/0810949024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glossy photo book<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"34.500938086304\"><\/p>\n<p>After the site went down, former Motherboard editor-in-chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/pggxny\/who-would-shut-down-hipster-runoff-a-gchat-with-carles\">Derek Mead interviewed \u201cCarles,\u201d<\/a> or Carlos Perez, the man who ran the site. \u201cMy hosting company and support team say that there are signs of foul play on the server, and some of the last actions before it crashed are very suspicious,\u201d Carles said at the time. \u201cMy server disk has crashed and remote backups were sabotaged.\u201d He said he had his suspicions about who might do this (a scorned musician or band, maybe, he thought) but wouldn\u2019t speculate publicly.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33.495327102804\"><\/p>\n<p>Hipster Runoff straddled an online era between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/nzg4yw\/fuck-you-and-die-an-oral-history-of-something-awful\">Something Awful\u2019s<\/a> obnoxious homebrew snark that was hard to look away from, and TMZ\u2019s shitpost journalism as a profession\u2014the dawn of the professional blogging complex\u2014that could get you into serious trouble if you pissed off the wrong people. A few years later, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/vv7vd9\/gawker-is-on-trial-for-the-sins-of-the-early-blogosphere-hulk-hogan-terry-bollea\">2016<\/a>, Hulk Hogan\u2019s lawsuit against Gawker over publishing of his sex tape bankrupted and essentially ended the site as we knew it. In hindsight, this was Hipster Runoff versus Grimes, just on a much bigger scale.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"39\"><\/p>\n<p>The fact that Grimes can bring this up 10 years later, and couch it in the ideas of anti-wokeness and cancellation, is absurd. DDOSing someone is a federal crime, as would be destroying their property in the form of erasing backups\u2014but she\u2019s well beyond the statute of limitations. She\u2019s comfortable talking about it now because she wasn\u2019t \u201ccanceled\u201d for anything; she\u2019s sitting in front of a camera talking to one of the biggest culture magazines in the U.S., which broadcast the photo again in this video interview. Since 2012, she went on to make several more critically acclaimed albums, walk red carpets, have kids with the world\u2019s richest man, and get profiled endlessly by the country\u2019s biggest media outlets and magazines. A \u201cleaked\u201d photo of her having fun at a party didn\u2019t ruin her life, but her revenge plot did take down a pretty good website.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"23.287878787879\"><\/p>\n<p>After Hipster Runoff went offline, Carles wrote for Motherboard for a few years about the media industry <a
