CYBER is Motherboard&#8217;s podcast and reporting on the dark underbelly of the internet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"18.590163934426\"><\/p>\n<p>The police arrested a couple accused of laundering cryptocurrency stolen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/zm79zy\/bitcoin-value-drops-hackers-steal-65-million-bitfinex\"><span>the 2016 hack of crypto exchange Bitfinex<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"36\"><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice announced the arrests and indictment of Russian-U.S. national Ilya Lichtenstein, 34, and his wife, Heather Morgan, 31, in a press release on Tuesday. Prosecutors accused Lichtenstein and Morgan of attempting to launder almost 120,000 BTC (currently worth around $5 billion) through a wallet owned by Lichtenstein.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"37\"><\/p>\n<p>In the last five years, the couple was allegedly able to launder 25,000 bitcoins (around $1 billion), and the rest of the hacked money remained in Lichtenstein\u2019s wallet. On January 31, 2022, investigators gained access to the wallet storing the stolen bitcoin \u201cby decrypting a file saved to Lichteinstein\u2019s cloud storage account, which had been obtained pursuant to a search warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>The file contained a list of 2,000 cryptocurrency addresses used in the laundering operations as well as their private keys. At that point, the authorities obtained warrants to seize the cryptocurrency, according to the document.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27\"><\/p>\n<p>This is how authorities traced the stolen bitcoin:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"simple-image simple-image--m-b\" data-component=\"SimpleImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"simple-image__img\" src=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1644342159738-screen-shot-2022-02-08-at-121203-pm.png\" width=\"592\" height=\"275\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2022-02-08 at 12.12.03 PM.png\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28\"><\/p>\n<p>Lichtenstein and Morgan laundered money using the following techniques, according to the document:<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-component=\"QuoteBlock\" class=\"abc__quote abc__quote--blockquote\" readability=\"14\">\n<p>&nbsp;\u201c(1) using accounts set up with fictitious identities; (2) moving the stolen funds in a series of small amounts, totaling thousands of transactions, as opposed to moving the funds all at once or in larger chunks; (3) utilizing computer programs to automate transactions, a laundering technique that allows for many transactions to take place in a short period of time; (4) layering the stolen funds by depositing them into accounts at a variety of VCEs and darknet markets and then withdrawing the funds, which obfuscates the trail of the transaction history by breaking up the fund flow; (5) converting the BTC to other forms of virtual currency, including anonymity-enhanced virtual currency, in a practice known as \u201cchain hopping\u201d; and (6) using U.S.-based business accounts to legitimize activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"body-image\" data-component=\"ImageBlock\">\n<div class=\"body-image__img\">\n<div><picture class=\"responsive-image lazyloader--lazy lazyloader--lowres\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1644342169574-screen-shot-2022-02-08-at-121319-pm.png?resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 700px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1644342169574-screen-shot-2022-02-08-at-121319-pm.png?resize=20:*\"><source media=\"(min-width: 0px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1644342169574-screen-shot-2022-02-08-at-121319-pm.png?resize=20:*\"><img class=\"responsive-image__img\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2022-02-08 at 12.13.19 PM.png\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"34\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminals always leave tracks, and today\u2019s case is a reminder that the FBI has the tools to follow the digital trail, wherever it may lead,\u201d FBI Deputy Director Paul M.
