{"id":45214,"date":"2022-02-09T15:57:49","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/33086\/Critical-Remote-Escalation-Flaw-In-Android-12-Fixed-In-Feb-Security-Patch.html"},"modified":"2022-02-09T15:57:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:57:49","slug":"critical-remote-escalation-flaw-in-android-12-fixed-in-feb-security-patch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/critical-remote-escalation-flaw-in-android-12-fixed-in-feb-security-patch\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Remote Escalation Flaw In Android 12 Fixed In Feb Security Patch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The February edition of Google&#8217;s monthly Android security update tackles, among other vulnerabilities, an eyebrow-raising critical flaw in Android 12.<\/p>\n<p>That bug, CVE-2021-39675, is present in the mobile OS&#8217;s System component, and can be abused to achieve remote escalation of privilege without the user needing to do anything at all, and &#8220;with no additional execution privileges needed,&#8221; as Google <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/source.android.com\/security\/bulletin\/2022-02-01\">cryptically put it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The web giant hasn&#8217;t revealed much more info about the vulnerability, though it referenced a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/android.googlesource.com\/platform\/system\/nfc\/+\/fef77a189022aa7ac53136e582a1444b1d2ef5f0%5E%21\/#F0\">source-level change<\/a> in Android&#8217;s wireless NFC code that brings in an additional check to make sure a size parameter isn&#8217;t too large. You can now imagine how this is a &#8220;remote escalation of privilege&#8221; bug that needs no user interaction to exploit.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YgQrihLToN9ILkCSAhKhDwAAAI0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YgQrihLToN9ILkCSAhKhDwAAAI0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Presumably Google doesn&#8217;t want to go too much into detail at this stage as it&#8217;s in the middle of rolling out its patches.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxout\" readability=\"17.146341463415\">\n<p>This February security patch batch marks the final official update for Google&#8217;s <strong>Pixel 3 smartphones<\/strong>, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2018\/10\/09\/google_pixel_3_slate_home_hub_launch\/\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> in October 2018, which is like a century ago for the internet goliath. As this documentation <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/nexus\/answer\/4457705?hl=en\">states<\/a>, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will &#8220;no longer receive Android version updates and security updates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Pixel 3 line did get a small update in January to fix the Microsoft Teams <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/12\/09\/android_911_teams\/\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency call screw-up<\/a>. As <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/02\/07\/pixel-3-final-update\/\">widely reported<\/a>, though, this month&#8217;s security bundle is the last software update from Google for the handhelds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As well as CVE-2021-39675, there are five high-severity vulnerabilities patched by Google in the System component, ranging from elevation-of-privilege flaws in Android 11 and 12 to a denial-of-service in Android 10 and 11.<\/p>\n<p>There are also five high-severity holes in Android&#8217;s Framework component, which can be exploited seemingly by malicious apps to gain elevated privileges. Those bugs have links to source-level patches that go into more detail. There&#8217;s a separate set of patches, dated 2022-02-05, that close a high-severity hole in System; a high-severity hole in Amlogic&#8217;s Fastboot component; five high-severity bugs in MediaTek code; three in Unisoc code; and 10 high-severity and one critical in Qualcomm code. Android&#8217;s patching landscape is a little non-trivial, though there are efforts to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/12\/17\/google_qualcomm_patching\/\" rel=\"noopener\">streamline it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, check for system updates and install them once they are available, if they haven&#8217;t already been pushed to your gadget. Source-level patches for these security holes have been released to the Android Open Source Project.<\/p>\n<p>There are, by the way, plenty of alternative flavors of Android out there, notably LineageOS, which supports <a href=\"https:\/\/devsjournal.com\/lineageos-supported-device-rom-download.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">hundreds<\/a> of devices, and its commercially-backed variant <a href=\"https:\/\/e.foundation\/e-os\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\/e\/OS<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/11\/12\/android_without_google_e_smartphone\/\">we&#8217;ve looked at before<\/a>, but even the 249 <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.e.foundation\/devices\" rel=\"nofollow\">devices<\/a> it supports only constitute a small slice of the vast profusion of gear out there.<\/p>\n<p>Most other downstream Android variants support far fewer models: GrapheneOS, the successor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2016\/12\/13\/prerolled_stripped_hardened_copperhead_androids_hit_oz_nz\/\">the older<\/a> Copperhead OS, supports just a dozen models of Pixel, as does CalyxOS.
