{"id":45012,"date":"2022-01-26T14:34:29","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T14:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/33038\/People-Are-Still-Getting-Pwned-A-Week-After-A-Crypto-Hack-Was-Contained.html"},"modified":"2022-01-26T14:34:29","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T14:34:29","slug":"people-are-still-getting-pwned-a-week-after-a-crypto-hack-was-contained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/people-are-still-getting-pwned-a-week-after-a-crypto-hack-was-contained\/","title":{"rendered":"People Are Still Getting Pwned A Week After A Crypto Hack Was Contained"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/articles\/61f033a3ce101c00944614a6\/lede\/1643146521764-multichain-hack-continues.jpeg?image-resize-opts=Y3JvcD0xeHc6MC44NDE3eGg7MHh3LDAuMDcwMnhoJnJlc2l6ZT0xMjAwOiomcmVzaXplPTEyMDA6Kg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"9.8914728682171\"><\/p>\n<p>Last week, a popular blockchain platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/akv7aa\/a-hacker-is-negotiating-with-victims-on-the-blockchain-after-dollar14m-heist\">announced that it had found a flaw that allowed hackers to drain funds from its users<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"36.124203821656\"><\/p>\n<p>When Multichain, which allows users to swap tokens between blockchains, made the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/multichainorg\/action-required-critical-vulnerability-for-six-tokens-6b3cbd22bfc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcement<\/a>, it said \u201cthe liquidity for these 6 tokens is fixed now,\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/multichainorg.medium.com\/answers-to-the-frequently-asked-questions-about-multichain-vulnerability-b3efe109a308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a day later it said<\/a> the hack was \u201ccontained,\u201d but users needed to revoke approvals for six tokens in order to avoid being hacked. In other words, Multichain was telling people that the only way to avoid getting hacked was for them to take action. But by telling its users about the vulnerability in such a public way, and putting the onus on them to defend themselves, the company also tipped off hackers that there were vulnerable wallets that could be drained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30.1125\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/epxb8m\/crypto-protocol-publicly-announces-flaw-users-relentlessly-owned-by-hackers\">And hackers proceeded to drain them<\/a>. Multiple hackers immediately stole more than $1.4 million, a total that climbed to $3 million soon after. One of the hackers announced on the Ethereum blockchain that they were actually stealing the money with the intention of \u201csaving\u201d it from the other, malicious hackers. In the end, the self-styled &#8220;white hat&#8221; hacker returned the funds as they promised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29.963190184049\"><\/p>\n<p>But a week later, users are still getting hacked and losing their crypto. On Monday, Multichain <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg\/status\/1485625281540812801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a> a list of wallets that are still vulnerable <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/17OdVxOxtuJzB73uc-Q2uQfuGsDIMg_vhglDqywU2Xlk\/edit#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a public spreadsheet<\/a>. Until users who own these wallets revoke contact permissions for the affected tokens, the vulnerability will always allow hackers to steal funds.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"34\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bug caused me to lose 13.11 ETH [around 2,400 USD], this is my emergency use, I am on the verge of bankruptcy, please help me! I need you to pay me back,\u201d a user that goes by Yi Wang said on Multichain&#8217;s public Telegram channel on Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>Wang told Motherboard in an online chat that Multichain did not communicate privately with them about the vulnerability, but that there was now way for the company to do that as it doesn\u2019t have their email. Wang\u2019s hope now is that the company will reimburse their losses.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31\"><\/p>\n<p>Another user, who goes by 0xCyda, asked in the public channel whether \u201cMultichain has some sort of insurance fund they will pay back the people that had lost money from the Hack?\u201d 0xCyda told Motherboard that his wallet was hacked \u201cthree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Multichain admins in the channel did not respond to his question directly, but asked him to file a support ticket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-component=\"QuoteBlock\" class=\"abc__quote abc__quote--blockquote\" readability=\"8.4508474576271\">\n<p><em><strong>Do you have any information about this hack? Multichain admins on Telegram declined to answer when Motherboard asked about the potential reimbursements. The company also did not respond to questions sent via email.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>In total so far, hackers have stolen $3.8 million in crypto from Multichain users, Tom Robinson, the co-founder of blockchain tracking firm Elliptic, told Motherboard in an email. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>The amount of users getting hacked is now lower than it was last week, but people are still getting hacked, according to security experts who have been following the incident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"37.594306049822\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome users are still in danger of getting hacked, until they remove approvals to the vulnerable contract. In the past 2-3 days, a handful of users every day have been getting hacked because they exchanged other assets into the vulnerable token (WETH) without having removed approvals,\u201d Yannis Smaragdakis, the co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dedaub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dedaub<\/a>, a security firm that alerted Multichain of the vulnerability, told Motherboard in an online chat. \u201cThree days ago it was about 20 users a day, now it&#8217;s down to 10 or so, mostly small amounts but a couple of bigger swaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32.197080291971\"><\/p>\n<p>There are indications that Multichain is also taking proactive action. Be\u2019ery pointed that there\u2019s a wallet labelled \u201cMultichain (Anyswap): Whitehat Rescue 3&#8243; on Etherscan, saying it \u201ccould be the contract is attacking for good = White hat that defensively hacks users.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg\/status\/1485906771101192193?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On Twitter<\/a>, Multichain thanked a user for &#8220;protecting&#8221; cryptocurrency. &#8220;We will return to users accordingly,\u201d the company wrote.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31\"><\/p>\n<p>According to Smaragdakis and another security expert, Multichain did all it could to limit the damage. Despite arguably opening its users up to being hacked en masse in the first place, it could have been much worse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29\"><\/p>\n<p>Smaragdakis said that the company \u201chandled this pretty well,\u201d and that it \u201cminimized the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"23.682310469314\"><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Smaragdakis <a href=\"https:\/\/media.dedaub.com\/phantom-functions-and-the-billion-dollar-no-op-c56f062ae49f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published&nbsp; a technical report on the vulnerability that caused the hack<\/a>, which claims that when Dedaub initially found the flaw and started working with Multichain to fix it, there was more than a billion dollars in crypto that could have been stolen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would have been possibly the largest crypto hack ever. $1B is a very conservative exposure calculation,\u201d Smaragdakis said in an online chat, adding that initially there were several avenues where hackers could steal cryptocurrency, and around 5,000 wallets exposed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>After it was alerted to the threat, Multichain worked to close out as many avenues it could, including contacting as many people as it could identify, prompting those people to revoke permissions and secure their funds from hackers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>Smaragdakis explained that when the company made the public announcement \u201cthere was nothing else left to do silently, so they needed to go public.\u201d At that point Smaragdakis and Multichain estimated that around $3 or 4 million in crypto were exposed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"28.993288590604\"><\/p>\n<p>Tal Be\u2019ery, the chief technology officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/zengo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZenGo<\/a> and a researcher who has been following the hack closely, agreed that it could have been worse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"31\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did what they could given their lack of preparation for such an event.
