Safari 15 browser at least since the problem was reported last November.<\/p>\n<p>Updates made available on Thursday to Apple developers \u2013 iOS 15.3 RC and macOS 12.2 RC \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2022\/01\/20\/ios-15-3-rc-fixes-safari-bug-that-gives-websites-access-to-browsing-history-and-google-id-data\/\">reportedly<\/a> fix the flaw, an improper implementation of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/API\/IndexedDB_API\/Using_IndexedDB\">IndexedDB API<\/a> that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/01\/17\/safari_15_indexeddb_bug\/\" rel=\"noopener\">allows websites to track users<\/a> and potentially identify them.<\/p>\n<p>The bug affects Apple&#8217;s Safari 15 browser on macOS, and <em>all browsers<\/em> on iOS and iPadOS 15 \u2013 because Apple requires all browsers on iOS to be based upon its WebKit engine, instead of alternatives like Chromium&#8217;s Blink or Mozilla&#8217;s Gecko.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Fingerprint.js, a maker of fraud and bot detection libraries, disclosed the privacy issue to Apple on November 28 last year and then <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fingerprintjs.com\/blog\/indexeddb-api-browser-vulnerability-safari-15\/\">posted publicly<\/a> about the problem on January 14 because Apple failed to respond in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xmd=\",fluid,mpu,leaderboard,\" data-lg=\",fluid,mpu,leaderboard,\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The bug is that Apple&#8217;s WebKit has implemented IndexedDB in a way that violates the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/Security\/Same-origin_policy\">Same-origin policy<\/a> (SOP), which forms the basis of browser security.<\/p>\n<p>When a website interacts with an IndexedDB database, explains Fingerprint.js engineer Martin Bajanik in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fingerprintjs.com\/blog\/indexeddb-api-browser-vulnerability-safari-15\/\">blog post<\/a>, the browser creates a new empty database with the same name in other active frames, tabs, and windows that are part of the same browser session.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YevH64szzfQxnUT0jHnVHQAAAA8&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Because these frames, tabs, and windows may be associated with different origins \u2013 e.g. websites \u2013 the availability of the database name to these sites violates the SOP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that database names leak across different origins is an obvious privacy violation,&#8221; said Bajanik. &#8220;It lets arbitrary websites learn what websites the user visits in different tabs or windows.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That would be bad enough but the privacy problem is compounded by the fact that many websites use unique identifiers within their IndexedDB names. Google, for example, appends its Google User ID to IndexedDB database names at websites like YouTube.com. This identifier can be used to query Google&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/people\/v1\/how-tos\/authorizing#profile-scopes\">People API<\/a>, for example, to fetch the user&#8217;s picture and possibly other information, depending on permissions.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YevH64szzfQxnUT0jHnVHQAAAA8&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YevH64szzfQxnUT0jHnVHQAAAA8&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is a huge bug,&#8221; observed Chrome developer advocate Jake Archibald, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaffathecake\/status\/1482627132903858176?s=20\">via Twitter<\/a> when the issue first emerged. &#8220;On OSX, Safari users can (temporarily) switch to another browser to avoid their data leaking across origins. iOS users have no such choice, because Apple imposes a ban on other browser engines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s obdurate refusal to allow other browser engines in iOS has been a sore spot for competing browser makers for years. It has led people to argue that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/10\/22\/safari_risks_becoming_the_new_ie\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Safari is the new Internet Explorer<\/a> \u2013 a browser holding everyone else back \u2013 and that Apple&#8217;s platform rules are anticompetitive, a claim <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/12\/15\/uk_cma_apple_google\/\" rel=\"noopener\">UK regulators, if not others, have lately begun to take seriously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On a more basic level, the problem is that Apple&#8217;s insistence on control isn&#8217;t accompanied by responsiveness to its customers. Apple doesn&#8217;t have to match the release cadence of faster moving competitors because there is no competition among iOS browsers. It&#8217;s WebKit or nothing if you use an iPhone or iPad.<\/p>\n<p>Almost two months after the IndexedDB bug was reported, there&#8217;s no publicly available fix. The situation was similar last year when a localStorage bug surfaced in May. Though Apple&#8217;s WebKit engineers, to their credit, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/trac.webkit.org\/changeset\/276983\/webkit\">responded immediately<\/a>, that repair wasn&#8217;t available until July when Apple released Safari 14.1.2. And in the interim, the company&#8217;s coders managed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/16\/apple_safari_indexeddb_bug\/\" rel=\"noopener\">to break IndexedDB<\/a> \u2013 a separate bug, now resolved, that prevented databases from being opened.<\/p>\n<p>At least Apple appears to be responsive to public pressure. According to Bajanik, Apple engineers began working to remediate the IndexDB bug on Sunday, January 16, two days after Fingerprint.js publicly disclosed the issue. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
