CYBER is Motherboard&#8217;s podcast and reporting on the dark underbelly of the internet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"29.098159509202\"><\/p>\n<p>Several users of a major cryptocurrency exchange endorsed by Matt Damon in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3fac474e-aa34-439a-8bdb-32b576fe2687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a notorious viral ad<\/a> complained over the weekend that their funds on the platform had been stolen. Confusion has reigned since then, as the company said no customer funds were stolen in what it vaguely referred to as an \u201cincident&#8221; in communications.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27.630996309963\"><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Crypto.com <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cryptocom\/status\/1482936866001207296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote on Twitter<\/a> that \u201ca small number of users [are] reporting suspicious activity on their accounts,\u201d but that \u201call funds are safe.\u201d On Monday, the company\u2019s CEO Kris Marszalek <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BENBALLER\/status\/1483188044781928449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated in a tweet<\/a> that \u201cno customer funds were lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33.529411764706\"><\/p>\n<p>But blockchain security and analytics company Peckshield <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peckshield\/status\/1483246262371557378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on Twitter<\/a> that Crypto.com lost about $15 million, roughly the equivalent of 4,600 ETH. Half of those funds, the company said, were being laundered through Tornado Cash, a tumbling and mixer service that obscures cryptocurrency transactions with the goal of making them harder to be tracked.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32\"><\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Crypto.com declined to comment and referred instead to what was posted on the company\u2019s CEOs and its main Twitter account. In that tweet, in addition to emphasizing that user funds were &#8220;safe,&#8221; Marszalek said that the Crypto.com team &#8220;has hardened the infrastructure in response to the incident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"27\"><\/p>\n<p>Peckshield did not immediately respond to a request for comment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"30\"><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear exactly what happened, but something seemingly did happen, and experts told Motherboard that it\u2019s possible Crypto.com is being very careful in its wording.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"33\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMovements of funds are visible on the blockchain, but it&#8217;s difficult to distinguish between regular withdrawals and theft,\u201d Tom Robinson, the co-founder and chief scientist of blockchain analysis firm Elliptic, told Motherboard in an email.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adph adph--border\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"abc__textblock size--article\" data-component=\"TextBlock\" readability=\"32.020771513353\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I&#8217;ve seen, <a href=\"http:\/\/crypto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crypto.com<\/a> haven&#8217;t said that no funds were lost, but that \u2018no customer funds were lost.\u2019 This could mean that the funds belonged to the company themselves rather than customers, or that any customer losses will be covered by the business. The company is known for having hired Matt Damon to star in <a href=\"https:\/\/crypto.com\/us\/fftb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an over-the-top video<\/a> that compares the company to historic inventors like the Wright brothers, as well as astronauts.
