{"id":44646,"date":"2021-12-30T19:16:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-30T19:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ef20c7ff-e4d8-4896-8ebc-506dbb70f0c8"},"modified":"2021-12-30T19:16:00","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T19:16:00","slug":"t-mobile-confirms-sim-swapping-attacks-led-to-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/t-mobile-confirms-sim-swapping-attacks-led-to-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"T-Mobile confirms SIM swapping attacks led to breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/6b6d805fb31de297ddeb0b3aa33888e348455c7d\/2021\/08\/04\/6512a1b1-ed35-4aae-a36c-841f83c85a76\/t-mobile.jpg?width=770&amp;height=578&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>T-Mobile has confirmed a data breach that was caused in part by SIM swapping attacks, according to a statement from the company.<\/p>\n<p>The T-Mo Report, a blog tracking T-Mobile, <a href=\"https:\/\/tmo.report\/2021\/12\/t-mobile-has-suffered-yet-another-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">obtained internal reports<\/a> showing that some data was leaked from a subset of customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some individuals had their customer proprietary network information (CPNI) leaked, which includes information about a customer&#8217;s plan, the number of lines, the phone numbers, the billing account, and more. Others had their SIMs swapped.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some were victims of both the CPNI leak and the SIM swaps.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed for comment by ZDNet, T-Mobile refused to go into detail about the attack and would not say how many customers were affected in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our people and processes worked as designed to protect our customers from this type of attempted fraud that unfortunately occurs all too frequently in our industry,&#8221; a T-Mobile representative said in response to questions from ZDNet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/t-mobile-reportedly-suffers-another-smaller-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CNET<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/t-mobile-says-new-data-breach-caused-by-sim-swap-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Bleeping Computer<\/a> that it sent notices to &#8220;a small number of customers&#8221; who were dealing with SIM swapping attacks, calling the attacks &#8220;a common industry-wide occurrence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top placeholder\"> <\/section>\n<p>A T-Mobile representative <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMobileHelp\/status\/1475857262480539648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;to say the company &#8220;is taking immediate steps to help protect all individuals who may be at risk from this cyberattack.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company experienced a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/t-mobile-hack-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massive data breach in August<\/a>&nbsp;that exposed sensitive information from over 50 million current, former, and prospective customers. This included names, addresses, social security numbers, driver&#8217;s licenses, and ID information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/how-i-survived-a-sim-swap-attack-and-how-my-carrier-failed-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have long criticized<\/a> the carrier for its lackluster support for SIM swapping victims. The company has repeatedly announced SIM swapping attacks and data breaches since 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
