The fix is version 2.17.0 of Log4j.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the third new version of the tool in the last ten days.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Yb-2liLe-MfRbM1XIPFDoAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2Yb-2liLe-MfRbM1XIPFDoAAAAIg&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>In case you haven\u2019t been paying attention, version 2.15.0 was created to fix <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/12\/13\/log4j_rce_latest\/\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2021-44228<\/a>, the critical-rated and trivial-to-exploit remote code execution flaw present in many versions up to 2.14.0.<\/p>\n<p>But version 2.15.0 didn\u2019t address another issue &#8211; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/12\/14\/apache_log4j_2_16_jndi_disabled\/\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2021-45046<\/a> &#8211; which allowed a remote attacker with control over Thread Context Map (MDC) to cook up malicious input using a JNDI Lookup pattern. The result could be remote code execution, thankfully not in all environments.<\/p>\n<p>Version 2.16.0 fixed that problem.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But it didn\u2019t fix CVE-2021-45105, which the ASF <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/logging.apache.org\/log4j\/2.x\/\" rel=\"noopener\">describes<\/a> as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Vendor-agnostic bug bounty program the Zero Day Initiative has described the flaw as follows.<\/p>\n<p>What to do?<\/p>\n<p>You know the drill by now: download the latest version 2.17.0 of Log4J, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/logging.apache.org\/log4j\/2.x\/download.html\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and install it everywhere Log4j runs, which of course turns out to be everywhere (including in some hard-to-find places).<\/p>\n<p>The ASF has also outlined the following mitigations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In PatternLayout in the logging configuration, replace Context Lookups like <code>${ctx:loginId}or $${ctx:loginId}<\/code> with Thread Context Map patterns <code>(%X, %mdc, or %MDC)<\/code> .<\/li>\n<li>Otherwise, in the configuration, remove references to Context Lookups like <code>${ctx:loginId}<\/code> or <code>$${ctx:loginId}<\/code> where they originate from sources external to the application such as HTTP headers or user input.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you\u2019re done, cross your fingers and hope the ASF has found all the flaws that need immediate fixes so we can all stop worrying about this piece of
