{"id":44361,"date":"2021-12-10T11:06:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T11:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/f52dd9ff-e977-4c0a-b631-4ce54ef52bba"},"modified":"2021-12-10T11:06:00","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T11:06:00","slug":"security-warning-new-zero-day-in-the-log4j-java-library-is-already-being-exploited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/security-warning-new-zero-day-in-the-log4j-java-library-is-already-being-exploited\/","title":{"rendered":"Security warning: New zero-day in the Log4j Java library is already being exploited"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/065d07c4077f40f136b8819a9f03df4a39538d34\/2021\/08\/06\/c55fade0-6def-4c6d-b0b7-d501337b05d8\/hands-on-a-keyboard-in-the-dark.jpg?width=770&amp;height=578&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A newly discovered zero-day vulnerability in the widely used Java logging library Apache Log4j is easy to exploit and enables attackers to gain full control of affected servers.<\/p>\n<p>Tracked as <a href=\"https:\/\/cve.mitre.org\/cgi-bin\/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2021-44228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2021-44228<\/a>, the vulnerability is classed as severe and allows unauthenticated remote code execution as the user running the application utilises the Java logging library. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cert.govt.nz\/it-specialists\/advisories\/log4j-rce-0-day-actively-exploited\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CERT New Zealand warns<\/a> that it&#8217;s already being exploited in the wild.<\/p>\n<div class=\"relatedContent alignRight\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\"> <span class=\"int\">ZDNet Recommends<\/span> <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Systems and services that use the Java logging library, Apache Log4j between versions 2.0 and 2.14.1 are all affected, including many services and applications written in Java.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/topic\/a-winning-strategy-for-cybersecurity\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\"><strong>A winning strategy for cybersecurity<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(ZDNet special report)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The vulnerability was first discovered in Minecraft but researchers warn that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/hybrid-cloud-brings-benefits-but-also-additional-cybersecurity-risks-heres-how-to-securely-manage-your-cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cloud applications<\/a> are also vulnerable. It&#8217;s also used in enterprise applications and it&#8217;s likely that many products will be found to be vulnerable as more is learned about the flaw.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lunasec.io\/docs\/blog\/log4j-zero-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">blog post by researchers at LunaSec<\/a> warns that anybody using Apache Struts is &#8220;likely vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LunaSec said: &#8220;Given how ubiquitous this library is, the impact of the exploit (full server control), and how easy it is to exploit, the impact of this vulnerability is quite severe. We&#8217;re calling it &#8220;Log4Shell&#8221; for short.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top placeholder\"> <\/section>\n<p>Organisations can identify if they&#8217;re affected by examining the log files for any services using affected Log4j versions. If they contain user-controlled strings, CERT-NZ uses the example of &#8220;Jndi:ldap&#8221;, they could be affected.<\/p>\n<p>In order to mitigate vulnerabilities, users should switch log4j2.formatMsgNoLookups to true by adding:&#8221;\u2010Dlog4j2.formatMsgNoLookups=True&#8221; to the JVM command for starting the application.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent the library being exploited, it&#8217;s urgently recommended that Log4j versions are <a href=\"https:\/\/logging.apache.org\/log4j\/2.x\/security.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">upgraded<\/a>&nbsp;to log4j-2.15.0-rc1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you believe you may be impacted by CVE-2021-44228, Randori encourages all organizations to adopt an assumed breach mentality and review logs for impacted applications for unusual activity,&#8221; cybersecurity researchers at Randori <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randori.com\/blog\/cve-2021-44228\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">wrote in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anomalies are found, we encourage you to assume this is an active
