This has affected around 330 SPAR stores across the North of England over the past 24 hours and we are working to resolve this situation as quickly as possible,&#8221; it told LancsLive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is currently impacting stores\u2019 ability to process card payments meaning that a number of SPAR stores are currently closed to shoppers or only taking cash payments. Around the world, the Dutch-owned chain has 13,000 shops. Most of these are locally owned franchises, with some being located in independent petrol stations. Closure of these therefore means some petrol stations are shut as well.<\/p>\n<p>An Esso-branded petrol station in Ulverston, Cumbria, was forced to close, with its operators claiming on Facebook that this was Spar&#8217;s fault:<\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage Center Border\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2021\/12\/06\/spar_esso_mountbarrow_closed.jpg?x=648&amp;y=374&amp;infer_y=1\" alt=\"Mountbarrow petrol station's Facebook post about Spar closure in December 2021\" title=\"Mountbarrow petrol station's Facebook post about Spar closure in December 2021\" height=\"374\" width=\"648\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Similarly, Lawrence Hunt &amp; Co Ltd, another Spar franchisee, used Facebook to announce its closure yesterday &#8220;due to a total network outage affecting tills, credit cards and back office systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage Center Border\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2021\/12\/06\/spar_lawrence_hunt_closures_december.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2021\/12\/06\/spar_lawrence_hunt_closures_december.jpg?x=648&amp;y=127&amp;infer_y=1\" alt=\"Spar franchisee Lawrence Hunt's Facebook post about December 2021 closures\" title=\"Spar franchisee Lawrence Hunt's Facebook post about December 2021 closures\" height=\"127\" width=\"648\"> <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p>Spar is not the only large UK retailer to suffer a recent cyber attack. In October Tesco <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/10\/25\/tesco_outage\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suffered a two-day outage<\/a> after unidentified malicious folk made an &#8220;attempt to interfere&#8221; with its website. A couple of weeks later some pranksters <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/08\/angling_direct\/\" rel=\"noopener\">compromised the website of Angling Direct<\/a>, directing people searching for fishing tackle to websites featuring an altogether different form of tackle.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture Village, another British retailer, was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/04\/furniture_village_confirms_cyberattack\/\" rel=\"noopener\">hit by a &#8220;cyber attack&#8221; in June as well<\/a>. With such companies processing and storing details on millions of Britons, it&#8217;s no surprise they&#8217;re now in the firing line of criminals looking to steal and cause havoc online.
