Not by malware, but by another buggy Windows patch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sad-faced Microsoft engineer has had to reset the &#8220;Days since we last shot ourselves in the foot&#8221; counter at the company&#8217;s HQ after a security update broke Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Windows Server Core.<\/p>\n<p>The issue started with patches emitted on 9 November, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/november-9-2021-kb5007205-os-build-20348-350-af102e6f-cc7c-4cd4-8dc2-8b08d73d2b31\">KB5007205<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/november-9-2021-kb5007206-os-build-17763-2300-c63b76fa-a9b4-4685-b17c-7d866bb50e48\">KB5007206<\/a>. The latter included the LTSC editions of Windows 10, however, as Microsoft pointed out, only devices with a Windows Server Core installation were affected. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Windows 10 will therefore still behave normally.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that not even Microsoft&#8217;s latest and greatest is immune from the company&#8217;s inability to release patches that don&#8217;t break something or other. KB5007205 is for Windows Server 2022 and the subsequent preview patch emitted earlier this week, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/november-22-2021-kb5007254-os-build-20348-380-preview-9a960291-d62e-486a-adcc-6babe5ae6fc1\">KB5007254<\/a>, has the same problem.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YaAKAqPVok8r00pwLDuMJwAAAI0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YaAKAqPVok8r00pwLDuMJwAAAI0&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>That said, the preview patch fixes the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/19\/windows_11_release_health\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows Installer problem<\/a> that broke Kaspersky&#8217;s products for some users (as did <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/november-22-2021-kb5007266-os-build-17763-2330-preview-c9ba0c4c-c8b7-409a-8fac-a76ffae8f94f\">KB5007266<\/a> for Server 2019. The Defender for Endpoint woes have, however, remained.<\/p>\n<p>As far as how the issue manifests itself, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint might simply fail to start or run on affected systems (again, just Server, not Windows 10.)
