{"id":43891,"date":"2021-11-11T23:52:26","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T23:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/philippines-gov-takes-down-passport-application-website-amid-privacy-leak-fears\/"},"modified":"2021-11-11T23:52:26","modified_gmt":"2021-11-11T23:52:26","slug":"philippines-gov-takes-down-passport-application-website-amid-privacy-leak-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/philippines-gov-takes-down-passport-application-website-amid-privacy-leak-fears\/","title":{"rendered":"Philippines gov takes down passport application website amid privacy leak fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Philippines&#8217; Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has disabled its online passport application tracker, citing a &#8220;data privacy issue&#8221; and hinting that information could have leaked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The DFA&#8217;s IT Unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this issue and is taking appropriate measures to secure the data that may have been exposed,&#8221; states a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dfa.gov.ph\/dfa-news\/statements-and-advisoriesupdate\/29702-statement-on-the-data-privacy-issue-with-the-dfa-passport-tracker\" rel=\"noopener\">notice<\/a> on the DFA website. &#8220;An internal audit will also be conducted to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines requires citizens to use the site, which launched only a couple of months ago, to apply for a passport \u2013 walk-in applications are allowed only under exceptional circumstances. However, at time of writing, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consular.dfa.gov.ph\/passport-tracking-system\" rel=\"noopener\">tracker<\/a> is returning a 404 error. One developer who spoke to the news outlet was able to find people&#8217;s personal information \u2013 including emails, birthday and contact numbers \u2013 on the DFA website via the l33t hacker tactic of \u2026 searching Google.<\/p>\n<p>The DFA has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dfaphl\/posts\/198039602479287\" rel=\"noopener\">notified<\/a> applicants of hotlines and email contacts.<\/p>\n<p>The passport problems follow the Philippines&#8217; introduction of an ID card, again requiring online registration, and again causing problems as the registration portal <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/04\/philsys_online_registration_portal\/\" rel=\"noopener\">became unavailable<\/a> within hours of operations commencing.
