{"id":43593,"date":"2021-10-25T13:16:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T13:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/solarwinds-attacker-on-the-move-russias-nobelium-crew-has-trebled-attacks-targeting-msps-cloud-resellers-says-microsoft\/"},"modified":"2021-10-25T13:16:12","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T13:16:12","slug":"solarwinds-attacker-on-the-move-russias-nobelium-crew-has-trebled-attacks-targeting-msps-cloud-resellers-says-microsoft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/solarwinds-attacker-on-the-move-russias-nobelium-crew-has-trebled-attacks-targeting-msps-cloud-resellers-says-microsoft\/","title":{"rendered":"SolarWinds attacker on the move: Russia&#8217;s Nobelium crew has trebled attacks targeting MSPs, cloud resellers, says Microsoft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia&#8217;s Nobelium group \u2013 fingered as being a Russian state actor by both the United States and Britain \u2013 has massively ramped up phishing and password spraying attempts against managed service providers (MSPs) and cloud resellers, Microsoft&#8217;s security arm has warned.<\/p>\n<p>The Windows maker said the group&#8217;s targeted attacks against &#8220;resellers and other technology service providers that customize, deploy and manage cloud services and other technologies on behalf of their customers&#8221; had trebled over the past three months.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/28\/solar_winds_attacker_nobelium_returns\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobelium<\/a> has been linked by Microsoft and others as the organisation behind <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/04\/15\/solarwinds_hack_russia_apt29_positive_technologies_sanctions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">the infamous SolarWinds supply chain compromise<\/a>, and linked to Russia&#8217;s foreign intelligence (SVR). Password spraying is a form of brute-forcing login portals \u2013 and the group&#8217;s use of brute-forcing suggests enabling multi-factor authentication is more important than ever before.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YXblId3ND8HQs-YNVxB9hgAAAEY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YXblId3ND8HQs-YNVxB9hgAAAEY&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>It does help if account authentication works properly and doesn&#8217;t <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/10\/12\/user_locked_out_of_microsoft\/\" rel=\"noopener\">lock users out altogether<\/a> if they see someone else attempting to log into a protected account, as one Microsoft user recently found.<\/p>\n<p>Compromising SolarWinds saw APT29 establish access to the build servers for the network monitoring company&#8217;s Orion product starting in late 2019. Over a period of almost a year, the Russian digital spies patiently infiltrated SolarWinds, waiting months between steps to check for any signs of detection. The attack was only noticed by infosec firm FireEye, a SolarWinds customer, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/12\/21\/in_brief_security\/\" rel=\"noopener\">in December 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Russia does not conduct offensive operations in the cyber domain,&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/washington.mid.ru\/en\/press-centre\/news\/embassy_comment_\/\">said<\/a> an implausible statement published by Russia&#8217;s US embassy in December 2020, long before the attack was attributed to the SVR. English-language statements from Russian political figures are usually intended to confuse and mislead Western audiences, the best guide to country&#8217;s government&#8217;s intentions being its actions rather than words.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, British and American cybersecurity agencies spent summer 2021 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/04\/27\/apt29_russia_svr_tactics_cisa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">cheerfully publishing details<\/a> of the SVR&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/07\/ncsc_russia_vulns_smart_cities_china_warning\/\" rel=\"noopener\">changing tactics, techniques, and procedures<\/a> as the agency seemingly tried to hide its tracks following public attribution of the SolarWinds hack. Even the private sector <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/07\/30\/riskiq_reveals_30_svr_apt29_c2_servers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">got in on the SVR-busting act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back on the SVR&#8217;s home turf, Kaspersky recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/29\/kaspersky_links_new_tomiris_malware\/\" rel=\"noopener\">attributed a new malware strain to the spies<\/a>, naming it Tomiris.
