{"id":43142,"date":"2021-09-30T12:08:34","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T12:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/579aa93d-542f-4ce3-8130-10bd4d0a167f"},"modified":"2021-09-30T12:08:34","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T12:08:34","slug":"these-systems-are-facing-billions-of-attacks-every-month-as-hackers-try-to-guess-passwords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/these-systems-are-facing-billions-of-attacks-every-month-as-hackers-try-to-guess-passwords\/","title":{"rendered":"These systems are facing billions of attacks every month as hackers try to guess passwords"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/3eccfb312c9970aef0dad44313ca77682668865a\/2021\/09\/30\/9785e807-14e2-4311-a6cb-2a1f0019704d\/password-123456-written-on-a-keyboard.jpg?width=770&amp;height=578&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Computer networks are being aggressively bombarded with billions of password-guessing attacks as cyber criminals attempt to exploit the growth in remote desktop protocol (RDP) and other cloud services in corporate environments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.welivesecurity.com\/2021\/09\/30\/eset-threat-report-t22021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Cybersecurity researchers at ESET<\/a>&nbsp;detected 55 billion new attempts at brute-force attacks between May and August 2021 alone \u2013 more than double the 27 billion attacks detected between January and April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"relatedContent alignRight\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\"> <span class=\"int\">ZDNet Recommends<\/span> <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Successfully&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/nsa-fbi-warn-of-ongoing-brute-force-hacking-campaign-tied-to-russian-military\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guessing passwords<\/a>&nbsp;can provide cyber criminals with an easy route into networks and an avenue they can use to launch further attacks,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ransomware-these-are-the-two-most-common-ways-hackers-get-inside-your-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including delivering ransomware<\/a>&nbsp;or other malware. Once in a network, they&#8217;ll attempt to use that access to gain additional permissions and manipulate the network, performing actions like turning off security services so they can go about their activities more easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/topic\/a-winning-strategy-for-cybersecurity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>A winning strategy for cybersecurity<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(ZDNet special report)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most popular targets for brute-force password-guessing attacks are RDP services. The rise in remote working has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/big-jump-in-rdp-attacks-as-hackers-target-staff-working-from-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led to an increase in people needing to use remote-desktop services<\/a>. Many of these are public-facing services, providing cyber criminals with an opportunity to break into networks \u2013 and it&#8217;s an opportunity they&#8217;re eager to exploit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sheer number of attacks means most will be automated, but if accounts are secured with simple-to-guess or common passwords \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/these-are-the-terrible-passwords-that-people-are-still-using-heres-how-to-do-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and many are<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 then they can make easy pickings for attackers. Once a password has been successfully breached, it&#8217;s likely an attacker will take a more hands-on approach to reach their end goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the number of attacks being in the billions, this is impossible to do manually \u2013 so these attack attempts are automated. Of course, there is always a manual aspect when cybercriminals are setting up or adjusting the attack infrastructure and specifying what types of targets are in their crosshairs,&#8221; Ondrej Kubovi\u010d, security awareness specialist at ESET, told ZDNet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top placeholder\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>In addition to targeting RDP services, cyber criminals are also going after public-facing SQL and SMB services. These services will often be secured with default passwords that attackers can take advantage of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ZDR: Best cybersecurity certificationOne of the reasons why brute-force attacks are successful is because so many accounts are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/these-are-the-top-passwords-hackers-will-try-when-attacking-your-device\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured with simple, one-word passwords<\/a>. Requiring passwords to be more complex could go a long way to preventing the accounts from being breached in brute-force attacks. Then avoid these three &#8216;exceptionally dangerous&#8217; cybersecurity mistakes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Organisations can also provide an additional layer of protection against brute-force password-guessing attacks \u2013 and other campaigns \u2013 by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/multi-factor-authentication-use-it-for-all-the-people-that-access-your-network-all-the-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deploying multi-factor authentication<\/a>&nbsp;(MFA). Using MFA means that, even if the attackers know the correct password, there&#8217;s an extra barrier to prevent them from automatically being able to access the network. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>MORE
