{"id":43112,"date":"2021-09-28T14:57:13","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T14:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/32672\/Microsoft-Warns-Of-Malware-With-Persistent-Backdoor-For-Hackers.html"},"modified":"2021-09-28T14:57:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-28T14:57:13","slug":"microsoft-warns-of-malware-with-persistent-backdoor-for-hackers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-warns-of-malware-with-persistent-backdoor-for-hackers\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Warns Of Malware With Persistent Backdoor For Hackers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/hub\/i\/r\/2021\/08\/16\/11940b37-a019-411c-a53d-087eaafff727\/thumbnail\/770x578\/6ba63fcbb79046d64355d93f4e45e8aa\/shutterstock-1498261517.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft has uncovered another piece of malware used by the attackers who were behind the SolarWinds software supply chain attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-fireeye-confirm-solarwinds-supply-chain-attack\/\">discovered in December<\/a>. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Security researchers have discovered numerous modules used by the attack group, which Microsoft calls Nobelium. The US and UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/solarwinds-us-and-uk-blame-russian-intelligence-service-hackers-for-major-cyber-attack\/\">in April officially blamed the attack<\/a> on the hacking unit of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), which are also known as APT29, Cozy Bear, and The Dukes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft in March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-weve-found-three-more-pieces-of-malware-used-by-the-solarwinds-attackers\/\">uncovered the GoldMax, GoldFinder, and Sibot components<\/a> from Nobelium, building on other malware from the group including Sunburst\/Solarigate, Teardrop and Sunspot. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/four-months-on-from-sophisticated-cyber-attack-alaskas-health-services-is-still-recovering\/\"><strong>Four months on from a sophisticated cyberattack, Alaska&#8217;s health department is still recovering<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The newly discovered malware, called FoggyWeb by Microsoft, is a backdoor used by the attackers after a targeted server has already been compromised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the group uses several tactics to steal network usernames and passwords to gain admin-level access to Active Directory Federation Services (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/windows-server\/identity\/active-directory-federation-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">AD FS<\/a>) servers, which gives them access to identity and access management infrastructure for controlling user access to apps and resources. This allows the attackers to stay inside a network even after a clean up. FoggyWeb has been used in the wild since as early as April 2021, according to Microsoft. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobelium uses FoggyWeb to remotely exfiltrate the configuration database of compromised AD FS servers, decrypted <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/windows-server\/identity\/ad-fs\/design\/token-signing-certificates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">token-signing certificate<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/windows-server\/identity\/ad-fs\/design\/certificate-requirements-for-federation-servers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">token-decryption certificate<\/a>, as well as to download and execute additional components,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/2021\/09\/27\/foggyweb-targeted-nobelium-malware-leads-to-persistent-backdoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">explains Ramin Nafisi of the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top placeholder\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>&#8220;FoggyWeb is a passive and highly targeted backdoor capable of remotely exfiltrating sensitive information from a compromised AD FS server. It can also receive additional malicious components from a command-and-control (C2) server and execute them on the compromised server,&#8221; Nafisi adds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The backdoor allows abuse of the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) token, which is used to help users authenticate to applications more easily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/dont-want-to-get-hacked-then-avoid-these-three-exceptionally-dangerous-cybersecurity-mistakes\/\"><strong>Don&#8217;t want to get hacked? on-premise and cloud infrastructure for configurations, and per-user and per-app settings; removing user and app access, review configurations, and re-issue new, strong credentials; and using a hardware security module to prevent FoggyWeb from stealing secrets from AD FS servers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft in May uncovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/2021\/05\/27\/new-sophisticated-email-based-attack-from-nobelium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">more Noeblium infection tools<\/a>, including&nbsp;<em>EnvyScout, BoomBox, NativeZone, and VaporRage, <\/em>as well as a spear-phishing campaign that piggy-backed on a
