{"id":43019,"date":"2021-09-24T16:54:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T16:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/cisco-patches-three-critical-holes-in-ios-xe-software\/"},"modified":"2021-09-24T16:54:00","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T16:54:00","slug":"cisco-patches-three-critical-holes-in-ios-xe-software","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/cisco-patches-three-critical-holes-in-ios-xe-software\/","title":{"rendered":"Cisco patches three critical holes in IOS XE software"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2021\/08\/security-2168234_1920-100901066-large.jpg?auto=webp\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Cisco has patched three critical security holes in its IOS XE software that&#8217;s used across a variety of its core routers and switches.<\/p>\n<p>The three critical warnings are part of a big release of <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.cisco.com\/security\/center\/publicationListing.x\" rel=\"nofollow\">32 security alerts<\/a>, many of which are IOS XE-related, including firewall, SD-WAN and wireless access vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"fakesidebar\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3342454\/linux-security-cmd-provides-visibility-control-over-user-activity.html\">Linux security: Cmd provides visibility, control over user activity<\/a><\/aside>\n<p>Of the critical patches, the worst is a weakness in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.cisco.com\/security\/center\/content\/CiscoSecurityAdvisory\/cisco-sa-ewlc-capwap-rce-LYgj8Kf\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cisco IOS XE Software for Cisco Catalyst 9000 Family Wireless Controllers<\/a>; it&#8217;s rated as a 10 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS).<\/p>\n<p>The vulnerability could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with administrative privileges or cause a denial of service (DoS) condition on an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted CAPWAP packet to an affected device. CAPWAP is a networking protocol that lets users centrally manage wireless access points.<\/p>\n<p>A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with administrative privileges or cause the affected device to crash and reload, resulting in a DoS, Cisco stated.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.cisco.com\/security\/center\/content\/CiscoSecurityAdvisory\/cisco-sa-iosxesdwan-rbuffover-vE2OB6tp\" rel=\"nofollow\">second critical warning<\/a> \u2013 with a 9.8 CVSS rating \u2013 impacts Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN Software and could let an attacker set off a buffer overflow on a the SD-WAN device, Cisco said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone\" id> <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis vulnerability is due to insufficient bounds checking when an affected device processes traffic,\u201d Cisco stated. \u201cAn attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted traffic to the device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a buffer overflow and possibly execute arbitrary commands with <em>root-<\/em>level privileges, or cause the device to reload, which could result in a DOS condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third critical warning also has a 9.8 CVSS rating and involves a weakness in the authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) function of Cisco IOS XE Software that could let an attacker install, manipulate, or delete the configuration of an affected device and cause memory corruption that results in a DoS.&nbsp; The vulnerability lets an attacker bypass NETCONF or RESTCONF authentication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 tablet desktop\" id> <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cA successful exploit could allow the attacker to use NETCONF or RESTCONF to install, manipulate, or delete the configuration of a network device or to corrupt memory on the device, resulting a DoS,\u201d Cisco stated.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco said there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/support\/docs\/ip\/access-lists\/13608-21.html#anc14\" rel=\"nofollow\">workaround<\/a> that addresses this vulnerability: Remove the enable password and configure an enable secret. There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/td\/docs\/ios-xml\/ios\/prog\/configuration\/1611\/b_1611_programmability_cg\/service_level_ACLs_NETCONF_RESTCONF.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">mitigation<\/a> that addresses this vulnerability: To limit the attack surface of this vulnerability, ensure that access control lists are in place for NETCONF and RESTCONF to prevent attempted access from untrusted subnets.<\/p>\n<p>Cisco has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/about\/legal\/cloud-and-software\/end_user_license_agreement.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">released free software<\/a> updates that address the critical vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"end-note\"> <!-- blx4 #2005 blox4.html --> <\/p>\n<div id class=\"blx blxParticleendnote blxM2005 blox4_html
