Although initial access to the Orion build server <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/01\/12\/solarwinds_tech_analysis_crowdstrike\/\" rel=\"noopener\">was gained in September 2019<\/a>, it wasn&#8217;t removed until June 2020 \u2013 and that removal was done by miscreants itself, four months after the Sunburst malware was deployed through Orion.<\/p>\n<div alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>A lawsuit was launched against SolarWinds by shareholders saying it failed to prevent the breaches and misled investors about security precautions taken beforehand, to which the company said, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/08\/04\/solarwinds_lawsuit_shareholders_motion_dismiss\/\" rel=\"noopener\">perhaps not untruthfully<\/a>, that it was &#8220;the victim of the most sophisticated cyberattack in history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, an infosec researcher <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/12\/16\/solarwinds_github_password\/\" rel=\"noopener\">noticed that the company&#8217;s password<\/a> for a publicly accessible server was
