{"id":42263,"date":"2021-08-11T13:30:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T13:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/28c9daa1-a627-49c9-9218-ec17d59797c8"},"modified":"2021-08-11T13:30:44","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T13:30:44","slug":"poly-network-hackers-potentially-stole-610-million-is-bitcoin-still-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/poly-network-hackers-potentially-stole-610-million-is-bitcoin-still-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Poly Network hackers potentially stole $610 million: Is Bitcoin still safe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/hub\/i\/r\/2021\/08\/11\/cc5954bd-b979-44bc-965a-1530bfa5606f\/thumbnail\/770x578\/cde42f3061aea4b1a84d7ec65159643e\/stolen-bitcoin.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Yesterday the <a href=\"https:\/\/poly.network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Poly Network<\/a>, which specialises in cryptocurrency transfers on the Binance, Ethereum and Polygon blockchains, announced that it had been attacked and assets transferred to hackers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425073987164381196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">It tweeted<\/a>: Important Notice: We are sorry to announce that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PolyNetwork?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">#PolyNetwork<\/a> was attacked on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BinanceChain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">@BinanceChain<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ethereum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">@ethereum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xPolygon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">@0xPolygon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Assets had been transferred to hacker&#8217;s following addresses: ETH: 0xC8a65Fadf0e0dDAf421F28FEAb69Bf6E2E589963 and BSC: 0x0D6e286A7cfD25E0c01fEe9756765D8033B32C71. <\/p>\n<p>It asked miners of affected blockchain and crypto exchanges such as Binance, HuobiGlobal, OKEx, Tether, BitGo, Uniswap and Circle Pay, amongst others, to blacklist tokens coming from these addresses. <\/p>\n<p>Poly Network said that the hacker had &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425130017546149891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">exploited a vulnerability between contract calls<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; where a <a href=\"https:\/\/slowmist.medium.com\/the-root-cause-of-poly-network-being-hacked-ec2ee1b0c68f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">contract can modify the keeper of a contract and execute a transaction<\/a>. Estimates of funds held in wallets say that the loss was in excess of $600 million.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kelvinfichter\/status\/1425217046636371969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">@kelvinfichter explained how the hack actually worked<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Blockchain ecosystem security company Slow Mist tweeted that a total of over <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SlowMist_Team\/status\/1425129915997773826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">$610 million US was transferred to three addresses<\/a>. It considers that the attack was likely to be &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SlowMist_Team\/status\/1425129923643994112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">long-planned, organized and prepared<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top placeholder\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>The Poly Network later broadcast an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425123153009803267\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">open message to the hacker saying<\/a> &#8221; The amount of money you hacked is the biggest on in the defi (decentralised finance) history&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>It added, &#8220;Law enforcement in any country will regard this as a major economic crime, and you will be punished&#8221;. Decentralised Finance (DeFi) aims to cut out third parties such as brokerages or exchanges. <\/p>\n<p>Poly Network has asked for the return of the funds <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425321860539949056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">and tweeted the addresses<\/a> that the funds are to be returned to. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paoloardoino\/status\/1425090760609832978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Paolo Ardoino tweeted<\/a> that Tether had frozen $33 million as part of the hack.<\/p>\n<p>Today Poly Network indicated that cash might be returning. It <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyNetwork2\/status\/1425395278341820420\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">tweeted <\/a>a screenshot of a transaction with a comment for the alleged hacker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: you can view the entire conversation and refund update <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/11LUJwLoHX8ZCyfjhg5YZ0V99iU6PafMNL_NET45FSVc\/htmlview?usp=sharing&amp;pru=AAABe1mn58s*t2Zu0S8u3w2_vJEOzAr0Sw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">in this Google doc<\/a> linked from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LX2025\/status\/1425425465913712645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">@LX2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that hackers have allegedly stolen Bitcoin. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/gbp3-5-billion-bitcoin-stolen-recoverable-hope-for-thousands-of-others\/\">February, legal proceedings began against Bitcoin developers after the theft of Bitcoin in 2020<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As legal processes ramp up across the world and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontier.digital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">lawyers aim to recover<\/a> different <a href=\"https:\/\/tokenrecovery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">lost or stolen assets<\/a>, there seem to be fewer places for hackers to hide as new legislation is adopted.<\/p>\n<p>The Bitcoin SV network, which recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BitcoinAssn\/status\/1423675821118660614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">tweeted that gigabyte blocks were mined on the public blockchain<\/a>, was subjected to a series of block-reorganisation attempts in July and early August that attempted to double-spend BSV coins. The network recommended that node operators mark the chain as invalid to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinassociation.net\/statement-on-august-2021-block-re-organisation-attack-on-the-bitcoin-sv-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">lock the attacker&#8217;s fraudulent chain out<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The EU proposal that addresses <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/qanda_21_3689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">improved detection of money laundering and terrorism financing in the Union<\/a> will require &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/eu-ban-on-anonymous-digital-currency-transfers-a-deep-dive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">digital currency service providers to apply for licences, and anonymous digital currency asset accounts will be banned<\/a>.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>The US&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congress-senate-infrastructure-bill-biden-240057a265d2b652b1144e482ee7573a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Infrastructure Bill<\/a>&nbsp;proposal requires <a href=\"https:\/\/coingeek.com\/meltdown-as-biden-infrastructure-bill-causes-panic-in-digital-currency-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">&#8216;brokers&#8217; in the digital currency industry to collect information on and report customers&#8217; tax obligations to the government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So is any version of Bitcoin safe?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With potential cross-chain vulnerabilities occurring as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/kusama-introduces-art-legos-complex-programmable-nfts\/\">relay chains<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/index.php\/category\/10250\/4\/index.php\/article\/as-eth-bitcoin-continues-to-rise-in-value-telos-launches-bridge-to-ethereum-allowing-assets-to-move-across-blockchains\/\">cross-chain bridges<\/a> make it easier to move assets across blockchain, penetration testing and checking become ever more important. <\/p>\n<p>Hacks like this in an Ethereum contract demonstrate how vulnerable smart contracts can be. <\/p>\n<p>Miners running smaller nodes &#8212; the very ethos of DeFi &#8212; become more exposed to vulnerabilities like this, whereas miners running large mining nodes clusters have the resources and budget to carry out extensive testing and mitigation when potential hacks occur. <\/p>\n<p>Will this be the largest hack ever, or will other vulnerabilities expose even larger amounts of money being moved to other blocks before being transferred out of blockchain currency exchanges? <\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this wake-up call will have developers making sure that their
