{"id":42262,"date":"2021-08-11T11:54:14","date_gmt":"2021-08-11T11:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-responds-to-printnightmare-by-making-life-that-little-bit-harder-for-admins\/"},"modified":"2021-08-11T11:54:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T11:54:14","slug":"microsoft-responds-to-printnightmare-by-making-life-that-little-bit-harder-for-admins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-responds-to-printnightmare-by-making-life-that-little-bit-harder-for-admins\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft responds to PrintNightmare by making life that little bit harder for admins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft appears intent on turning the print spooler remote code execution vulnerability known as &#8220;PrintNightmare&#8221; into an AdminNightmare, judging by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc-blog.microsoft.com\/2021\/08\/10\/point-and-print-default-behavior-change\/\">its latest mitigation<\/a>, which requires administrator privileges for Point and Print driver installation and update.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder (if one were needed), <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/07\/02\/printnightmare_cve\/\" rel=\"noopener\">PrintNightmare<\/a> began life as an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/30\/windows_print_spool_vuln_rce\/\" rel=\"noopener\">accidentally disclosed zero-day<\/a> at the end of June and permitted an attacker to run arbitrary code on Windows with SYSTEM privileges. The fix can also be turned off via a registry key, something Microsoft advised against. &#8220;Disabling this mitigation will expose your environment to the publicly known vulnerabilities in the Windows Print Spooler service,&#8221; it said, &#8220;and we recommend administrators assess their security needs before assuming this risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that it might not resolve all the vulnerabilities uncovered by researchers.
