Android has 47 times more malware than iOS does. Why is that? It&#8217;s because we&#8217;ve designed iOS in such a way that there&#8217;s one app store, and all the apps are reviewed before going on the store. That keeps a lot of this malware stuff out of our ecosystem, and customers have told us very continuously how much they value that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, regulators have not solely concerned themselves with the distribution of software, taking issue with the company&#8217;s payment processing. Apple has aggressively enforced rules that prevent developers from processing digital transactions using any system other than its own, where it takes between 15 and 30 per cent of all revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has also controversially enacted anti-steering rules that prevent developers from informing customers about cheaper alternatives to its own in-app payments. In practice, this means Spotify cannot tell subscribers to pay via its own website, where its processing costs would likely measure in the single digits.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the European Union issued a preliminary ruling that accused Apple of abusing its power to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/04\/30\/european_commission_apple\/\" rel=\"noopener\">distort the market for music streaming services<\/a>. If it decides to take action, the company could be fined up to $27bn.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YMttEh7g0zsfvNCAds2tqwAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YMttEh7g0zsfvNCAds2tqwAAABE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Similar allegations have been made in Australia, while in the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/03\/05\/uk_apple_antitrust\/\" rel=\"noopener\">started a formal investigation<\/a> into whether Apple&#8217;s control of the App Store violates the Competition Act of 1998.<\/p>\n<p>The CMA has separately <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/15\/cma_google_apple_mobile\/\" rel=\"noopener\">launched an investigation into the wider mobile ecosystem<\/a>, including browsers and operating systems.<\/p>\n<p>The App Store also remains the subject of a high-stakes legal battle between Apple and Epic Games, with the latter having accused Apple of violating both California and Federal antitrust legislation. Although both companies were former allies, their relationship soured in August of last year after Epic Games covertly added an alternative payment gateway to its popular title <i>Fortnite<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The trial between Epic Games and Apple <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/26\/the_epic_vs_apple_trial\/\" rel=\"noopener\">lasted three weeks<\/a>, and a judgement is expected to be issued later this year.<\/p>\n<p>In the face of this scrutiny, Apple has repeatedly tried to frame its regulations as necessary for the health of the overall ecosystem. Speaking at the event, Cook told Lacroix he is &#8220;worried deeply&#8221; about user privacy, and said the company would engage constructively with regulators.<\/p>\n<p>While any liberalisation may come with security risks, it could also harm Apple&#8217;s bottom line. Although Apple does not disclose total revenue from the App Store, various analyses have suggested the platform grossed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/08\/apples-app-store-had-gross-sales-around-64-billion-in-2020.html\">between $64bn<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"
