{"id":40796,"date":"2021-05-07T02:57:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T02:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/google-play-to-require-privacy-labels-on-apps-in-2022-almost-two-years-after-apple\/"},"modified":"2021-05-07T02:57:09","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T02:57:09","slug":"google-play-to-require-privacy-labels-on-apps-in-2022-almost-two-years-after-apple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/google-play-to-require-privacy-labels-on-apps-in-2022-almost-two-years-after-apple\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Play to require privacy labels on apps in 2022, almost two years after Apple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google has decided the time has come to require app developers to disclose the data their wares collect, and their security practices, in their Play Store listings.<\/p>\n<p>The data-harvesting ad giant on Thursday <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/india.googleblog.com\/2021\/05\/new-safety-section-in-google-play-will.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detailed<\/a> plans to create a \u201csafety section in Google Play\u201d that it says \u201cwill help people understand the data an app collects or shares, if that data is secured, and additional details that impact privacy and security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A precise policy will be revealed in Q3 2021. For now, Google has said \u201camong other things, we\u2019ll ask developers to share:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201dWhat type of data is collected and stored: Examples of potential options are approximate or precise location, contacts, personal information (e.g. name, email address), photos &amp; videos, audio files, and storage files<\/li>\n<li>How the data is used: Examples of potential options are app functionality and personalization\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Developers with apps in the Play Store will also be required to disclose whether:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The app has security practices, like data encryption<\/li>\n<li>The app follows Google\u2019s Families policy<\/li>\n<li>The app needs this data to function or if users have choice in sharing it<\/li>\n<li>The app\u2019s safety section is verified by an independent third-party<\/li>\n<li>The app enables users to request data deletion, if they decide to uninstall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Developers will be responsible for writing their own disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle Play will introduce a policy that requires developers to provide accurate information,\u201d says Google\u2019s blurb. \u201cIf we find that a developer has misrepresented the data they\u2019ve provided and is in violation of the policy, we will require the developer to fix it. On an as-yet-unrevealed date in Q2 2022, all apps will be required to have their info recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Even Google\u2019s own apps will have to comply.<\/p>\n<p>Developers that makes apps for iOS and Android may find this new requirement is not a hassle, as Apple has required similar \u201cnutrition labels\u201d since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/11\/06\/apple_privacy_advice\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s post doesn\u2019t explain why it has decided now is the time to follow Apple\u2019s example. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a href=\"https:\/\/go.theregister.com\/feed\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/05\/07\/google_play_security_privacy_disclosure_requirement\/\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developers want to do this, says Google.
