Rather, we are raising awareness that some individuals may be operating with nefarious intent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"> <span>Access to sensitive information or skills?<\/span><br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p>The campaign is primarily targeted at public-sector workers in members of the multinational Five Eyes espionage alliance, with the US FBI and Office of the Director of National Intelligence both praising CPNI&#8217;s efforts along with Australia and New Zealand. It targets recruiting efforts by hostile countries&#8217; spies rather than simple phishing.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Burgess, Australia&#8217;s director general of security, added: &#8220;Five Eyes collaboration is critical \u2013 the international scale and nature of the threat requires an international response.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While <i>The Times<\/i> reported that Russia and China state actors were the biggest suspects, much LinkedIn phishing and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/01\/26\/north_korea_targeted_me_0_day\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">targeting activity<\/a> has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/08\/25\/lazarus_group_north_korea_linkedin_lure\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">come from North Korea<\/a> in recent years, though the technique is not confined to Little Kim&#8217;s nation. A couple of years ago, for example, a deepfake account on LinkedIn was used to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/06\/17\/roundup_ai\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">target a Russia specialist at British think tank Chatham House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The world of tech is well used to LinkedIn approaches from malicious or not-as-they-seem characters.
